VARIOUS SMALL PROGRAMS AND EXHIBITS DESIGNED TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY ABOUT RENEWABLE ENERGY.
"RENEWABLE ENERGY SUMMER CAMPS" PROVIDED 2 RENEWABLE ENERGY SUMMER CAMPS TO STUDENTS IN HALIFAX AND SURROUNDING COUNTIES INCREASING THEIR AWARENESS OF ENERGY FROM NATURAL SOURCES. CAMPERS WERE INSPIRED TO MAKE PROJECTS POWERED BY SOLAR, WIND AND WATER AND SEE THE RELATIONSHIP OF CORE DISCIPLINES - SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS AND MATHEMATICS. CAMPERS ALSO LEARNED MEASURES TO INCREASE ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN THEIR HOMES. HEALTHY LIVING IS BUILT INTO THE SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM THROUGH HEALTHY MEALS AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. 60 STUDENTS ATTENDED.
"SOLAR INSTALLATION AND OSHA TRAINING CLASS" PROVIDED TRAINING CLASSES FOR HALIFAX AND EDGECOMBE COUNTY RESIDENTS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HALIFAX COMMUNITY COLLEGE. TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES TARGETED RESIDENTS WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED, UNDEREMPLOYED AND NEEDING A SECOND CHANCE. WITH THIS TRAINING, IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THEY WILL RECEIVE FIRST CONSIDERATION FOR HIRING OF LOCAL SOLAR PROJECTS. SOLAR INSTALLATION CLASS COVERED TOPICS OF SOLAR FUNDAMENTALS, SOLAR EDUCATION, SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULES, RACKING AND MOUNTING, ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS, USE OF SMALL TOOLS AND HANDS-ON INSTALLATION. ADDITIONALLY, STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN A CLASSROOM-BASED OSHATRAINING WHICH RESULTED IN OSHA 10 CERTIFICATIONS. MOST WORKERS IN CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING DEVELOPMENT AND OTHER RELATED FIELDS WILL NEED TO TAKE HAZARD RECOGNITION TRAINING WHICH WILL ENSURE THAT WORKERS CAN IDENTIFY, PREDICT AND STOP POTENTIAL HAZARDS IN THE WORKPLACE. 200 STUDENTS ATTENDED.
