Organizations Filed Purposes:
We inspire people to enjoy, value and protect the wild character and natural legacy of the South.
HANDS ON CONSERVATION - Wild South engages communities in practical projects that produce real conservation results, combining enjoyment of the outdoors with on-the- ground accomplishments that meet specific forest needs driving public lands policy. This year's focus was in the Cheaha, Dugger Mountain, Linville Gorge, and Sipsey Wilderness Areas, as well as the Harper Creek and Lost Cove Wilderness Study Areas, with additional efforts on the greater Bankhead and Grandfather Ranger Districts. Projects included trash cleanup, graffiti removal, trail maintenance, campsite maintenance, forest road culvert repair, supporting wildfire response, and the highly successful Volunteer Wilderness Ranger program. Community outreach efforts included guided hikes, Leave-No-Trace classes, and an outdoor film festival.
HANDS ON SCIENCE - Wild South involves the public in science-based solutions to the shared challenges of public lands, targeting opportunities where people can make a difference in the wildest of our forests and waters. This year's community-powered projects included: monitoring water quality, planting live stakes for streambank restoration, mitigating trail erosion to reduce sedimentation into trout waters, mapping dispersed campsites, monitoring clifftop and cliffside recreation impact, removal of invasive plants, construction of stone barriers to protect trailside endangered plants, and discovery of new populations of endangered plants and lichens for future protection efforts.
HANDS ON ADVOCACY - Wild South leads by example, defending wild lands in close collaboration with the wide range of forest stakeholders, engaging and representing communities in public lands decision-making. This year's efforts included advocacy for protection of Harper Creek and Lost Cove Wilderness Study Areas, as well as defense of mountain biking and other recreation use across the forest in the upcoming Nantahala-Pisgah Forest Plan revision. In Alabama, a multi-year evaluation of Forest Service efficacy in wilderness management was begun. Public response was organized for commenting on Forest Service changes to NEPA regulations, for finalizing of the boundary for the Sipsey Fork Wild & Scenic River, and for support of LWCF funding for the Long Arm land acquisition adjoining Linville Gorge Wilderness.
