RECOGNIZING THE NEED TO PREPARE CHILDREN DIFFERENTLY FOR SUCCESS IN THE 21ST CENTURY, OPERATION XCEL PROVIDES FUTURE-FOCUSED AFTER-SCHOOL, SUMMER, AND MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS. WE PROMOTE ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT AND CHARACTER GROWTH THROUGH INDIVIDUAL AND TARGET-BASED OBJECTIVES, WITH A FOCUS ON INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT AND ACHIEVEMENT. WE ARE GUIDED BY A STRONG WORK ETHIC AND A DEDICATION TO COMMUNITY BETTERMENT. THROUGH OUR ACADEMIC AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS, WE DEMONSTRATE OUR COMMITMENT-TO PROVIDING EQUAL ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES, -TO SUPPORTING DIVERSITY OF THOUGHT, -TO CREATING A STRONG FOUNDATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIFE LONG LEARNERS, -TO FOSTERING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, AND TO ENCOURAGING CAREER MINDFULNESS IN OUR YOUTH.
OPERATION XCEL IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT ENGAGES STUDENTS, PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITY TO INCREASE EDUCATIONAL, SOCIAL AND CAREER SKILLS THROUGH ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT. WE ALSO PROVIDE PARENTING AND ADVOCACY EMPOWERMENT.
OPERATION XCEL OPERATES 21ST CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS. THIS FISCAL YEAR, WE SERVED NEARLY 400 STUDENTS AT FIVE NORTH CAROLINA LOCATIONS: ONE STOKESDALE SITE, ONE HIGH POINT SITE, TWO GREENSBORO SITES AND ONE GIBSONVILLE SITE. THEREFORE, WE CONTINUED TO INCREASE OUR INPACT IN THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS SERVED WITH TWO ADDITIONAL SITES. MOST STUDENTS COME FROM LOW-INCOME BACKGROUNDS AND THEREFORE WOULD NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE TYPE OF SERVICES WE PROVIDE. OPERATION XCEL OFFERS OUR SERVICES FREE TO OUR FAMILIES.WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT GIVING OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ALL THE TIME, RESOURCES, SUPPORT, AND ENCOURAGEMENT THEY NEED TO HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TO ATTAIN THEIR GOALS AS ANY OTHER STUDENT. WE COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS TO IDENTIFY STUDENTS THAT COULD BENEFIT FROM OUR PROGRAM.AS WE CONTINUE TO GROW AND PROVIDE OUR SERVICES TO MORE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES, WE ARE SEEKING NEW PARTNERSHIPS TO SUPPORT OUR PROGRAMMING THAT INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:OPERATION HOMEWORK IS AN ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAM EMPHASIZING MATH, READING, AND SCIENCE ENRICHMENT, HOMEWORK COMPLETION, TEST PREPARATION, SOCIAL SKILL BUILDING, AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF EFFECTIVE STUDY HABITS. THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH PARENTS, STUDENTS, AND SCHOOL PERSONNEL, WE WORK TO ESTABLISH A SUCCESSFUL PLAN FOR EACH STUDENT. EACH DAY, STUDENTS RECEIVE ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE WITH HOMEWORK, SPECIALIZED SKILL BUILDING DETERMINED BY INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, HANDS ON ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES IN SCIENCE AND MATH, AND SOCIAL SKILLS/CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.DUE TO COVID 19, WE DID NOT HOLD OUR 3 STEPS AHEAD SUMMER PROGRAM. INSTEAD WE COLLABORATED WITH THREE OTHER YOUTH-SERVING ORGANIZATIONS UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF RESILIENCE HIGH POINT TO BRING STRUCTURED VIRTUAL SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. THIS COLLABORATION OF RESILIENCE HIGH POINT MEMBERS BROUGHT TOGETHER THE STRENGTHS OF THE YWCA OF HIGH POINT, D-UP, BIG BROTHER BIG SISTERS, AND OPERATION XCEL. OPERATION XCEL PROVIDED VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING CALLED EXTRAORDINARY EXCURSIONS. THIS SEVEN WEEK PROGRAM FOCUSED ON SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING WITH SEPARATE SESSIONS FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. OTHER ACTIVITIES OFFERED THROUGH THE COLLABORATION INCLUDED, YOUTH FITNESS WITH A YWCA INSTRUCTOR, AND DANCE AND MOVEMENT CLASSES WITH ROYAL EXPRESSIONS. THERE WERE ALSO WEEKLY VIDEOS FOR YOGA, BASKETBALL, AND WORKOUTS. OPERATION XCEL ALSO GAVE OUT 200 ACTIVITY BAGS WITH BALLS, JUMP ROPES, FRISBEES, SIDEWALK CHALK, AND BUBBLES.OUR RESULTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:-60% OF STUDENTS GREW IM MATH AND READING BEYOND EXPECTED LEVELS OF GROWTH-80% OF STUDENTS SHOWED INCREASES IN SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING-95% OF STUDENTS FEEL OPERATION XCEL IS FUN AND HELPFUL-100% OF TEACHERS SURVEYED FEEL STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM ATTENDING OPERATION XCELCURRENTLY, THERE IS A DEMAND FOR FOUR ADDITIONAL SITES: TWO ELEMENTARY SITES IN GREENSBORO, NC AND TWO MIDDLE SCHOOL SITES IN HIGH PONT, NC. WE WILL UNDERTAKE A STRATEGIC PLANNING PHASE IN THE UPCOMING FISCAL YEAR TO DETERMINE OUR ABILITY TO MEET THESE DEMANDS.OPERATION XCEL CONTINUED TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND ATTENDED COMMUNITY EVENTS REGULARLY, ARRANGED PRESENTATIONS AND OUTREACH AT AREA SCHOOLS, BUSINESSES, AND LOCAL YOUTH GROUPS, AND CREATED MARKETING MATERIALS FOR DISTRIBUTION. PROMOTING OPERATION XCEL AT PARENT NIGHTS, ATHLETIC EVENTS, PTA MEETINGS AND VOLUNTEER OUTREACH EVENTS WITHIN PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS PROVOKED THE ATTENTION OF AREA COMPANIES, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND INDIVIDUALS. WE HELD SHOWCASE EVENTS DURING THE SUMMER CAMP AND FOR THE END OF THE YEAR. LOCAL FOUNDATIONS TOURED AND REVIEWED PORTFOLIOS AND PROJECTS. WE CONTINUED TO INCREASE STAFF TRAININGS, AND ATTENDANCE AT INVALUABLE STATE-WIDE CONFERENCES.
