Organizations Filed Purposes:
To inspire and enable, through character development, all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive responsible and caring citizens.
Founded in 1896, Brigade Boys & Girls Club is the oldest and the largest non-profit in the region dedicated to kids. Over the past 120+ years we have been dedicated to the youth of our community and have made the most significant impact of all organizations in the development of our youth in New Hanover, Onslow, and Pender Counties. In 2020, we served 1,500 youth in grades K-12, in our 12 site locations. The specific demographics of members include; 58% ages 5-9, 30% ages 10-12, 9% ages 13-15, and 3% of our members are 16 years and older. 50% of our kids come from single parent homes, and 59% are at or near the poverty level. The legacy that we have created is found in our mission statement, "to inspire and enable, through character development, all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens". Our vision is to provide a world class Club experience that assures that success is within reach of every young person who is a BBGC member. We believe that all members will be on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future. Additionally, all will demonstrate good character and citizenship, and will live a healthy life style. Our purpose is to provide and facilitate out-of-school experiences that inspire and empower Club youth to achieve success. In 2020 Brigade shifted operations to mee the critical needs from the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Spring of 2020, Brigade served over 18,000 meals during school closure, provided eight weeks of virtual programming to Club members and distributed over 150 wellness kits to families. In the summer of 2020, Brigade opened for in-person summer camp, operating six sites serving over 500 youth and providing almost 9,000 free meals and 10,000 free snacks. In the fall of 2020, Brigade again shifted operations to open full day enrichment programming due to in-person school closure. Brigade oeprated four sites, serving 500 youth from over 60 schools across four counties, including remote learning assistance and enrichment activities. The Brigade Boys & Girls Club is exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
