Organizations Filed Purposes:
To support the development of young children and families in Wilson County through collaborative, community-based programs focusing on health, family support services and quality education.
Early Care & Education: 266 early care educators attended training workshops; 1 child care facility received technical assistance. Program served 37 child care centers and held 43 workshops impacting 6682 children based on the child care provider participation. Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) provides technical assistance to child care facilities to help maintain and increase their star ratings. CCR&R provides affordable professional development workshops, on-site technical assistance visits, mock assessments, current updates on child care rules and regulations, and assists those who are interested in opening a new child care facility in Wilson County. CCR&R strives to build community partnerships that focus on early childhood development. North Carolina Pre-K (DCDEE) provides four year old children with high quality Pre-K classroom experiences to better prepare children for success in school. Program served 162 children in four centers. Three trainings were held for NC Pre-K classroom staff. Child Care Subsidy Scholarships assisted eligible families residing in Wilson County by providing subsidy scholarships for quality child care. Scholarships were provided to 140 children, including 8 children with special needs to attend 3-star or higher licensed child care facilities. Program scholarships benefited 105 families and 20 child care facilities.
Health and Safety: 25 child care facilities received training and assistance (through grants for space design and materials) to improve nutrition and physical activty for their students. Several of the child care sites are producing vegetables and implementing cooking activities in the classroom. Children are allowed to make decisions of which vegetable they would like to taste, and even take some cucumbers and tomatoes home. Wilson County Partnership for Children implemented the Child Nutrition Road Trip in Wilson. Consequently, we were able to engage and bring all the Sites Directors together to observed the two sites implementing family style lunch. The Child Nutrition Road Trip was a great experience and opportunity for other sites to see what their colleagues are doing. They also took a copy of their lunch menues to compare. They were able to go back to their own sites and implement family style lunch with children age 3 to 5. Consequently, now other sites are building their strengths in different areas around the Shape NC initiative and implementing some of the GO NAP SACC steps to take action to make healthy changes.
Family Support: 1,572 children in Wilson County received books through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
