Organizations Filed Purposes: FORSYTH BACKPACK PROGRAM IS A LOCAL, ALL-VOLUNTEER 501(C)(3) NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT BELIEVES ALL CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE THE BEST VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES THAT THEY CAN BE. TO THAT END, FORSYTH BACKPACK PROGRAM PROVIDES NUTRITIOUS FOOD IN BACKPACKS ON WEEKENDS AND LONG HOLIDAYS TO WS/FCS STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY SCHOOL PERSONNEL AS BEING IN NEED OF FOOD AND TO CHILDREN IN NEED OF SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS.EACH BACKPACK PURCHASED FROM SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK OF NORTHWEST NC ("SECOND HARVEST") AT AN APPROXIMATE COST OF $5 CONSISTS OF 2 BREAKFASTS AND 2 LUNCHES. THE PRODUCTS ARE KID-FRIENDLY, EASILY ACCESSIBLE BY CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS 5, AND CAN BE EATEN WITH NO COOKING REQUIRED.

FEED CHRONICALLY HUNGRY CHILDREN IN WINSTON-SALEM FORSYTH COUNTY NC SCHOOLS

SCHOOL PROGRAMS: PRIOR TO COVID-19, FBP PROVIDED WEEKEND MEALS TO APPROXIMATELY 440 STUDENTS EACH SCHOOL YEAR WEEKEND. CURRENT SCHOOL PROGRAMS INCLUDE: COOK, FOREST PARK, KIMBERLEY PARK, GIBSON, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ACADEMY, KONNOAK, MIDDLE FORK, UNION CROSS AND JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, AND HANES MIDDLE SCHOOL. FBP ALSO WORKED WITH, BUT DID NOT RUN, THE PROGRAMS AT SHERWOOD FOREST AND WHITAKER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. AFTER SCHOOL CLOSURE DUE TO COVID-19, FBP PARTNERED WITH THE WS/FCS CHILD NUTRITION DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE BACKPACKS TO ALL CHILDREN (APPROXIMATELY 1000 PER WEEK) COMING TO MOST OF THESE SCHOOLS PLUS GRIFFITH ELEMENTARY FOR GRAB-N-GO MEALS. HIGH SCHOOL FOOD CLOSETS: FBP PROVIDES FULL SIZED CANNED AND PACKAGED GOODS FOR STUDENTS TO CHOOSE AT PARKLAND HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE COLLEGE AT FORSYTH TECHNICAL INSTITUTE.HOLIDAY SUPPLEMENTAL PROGRAM: FBP PROVIDES FREE MEALS FOR THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE LONG HOLIDAYS (THANKSGIVING, WINTER, SPRING AND MEMORIAL DAY BREAKS) TO STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN BACKPACK PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. FOR THE 2019-2020 HOLIDAYS, FBP PROVIDED MEALS TO BETWEEN 1100-1500 STUDENTS IN UP TO 25 SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT. FBP OFFERED FREE HOLIDAY FOOD TO ALL 35 OFFICIAL BACKPACK PROGRAMS IN THE COUNTY, ALTHOUGH A PORTION OF THE SCHOOLS DECLINED THE OFFER FOR VARIOUS REASONS. SUMMER PROGRAM: DUE TO COVID-19, FBP IS PARTNERING WITH THE WS/FCS CHILD NUTRITION DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE WEEKEND MEALS TO HUNDREDS OF CHILDREN COMING TO SELECT SCHOOLS FOR GRAB-N-GO MEALS AND WITH EZEKIEL A.M.E. ZION CHURCH WHICH IS PROVIDING MEALS AT COMMUNITY FEEDING SITES. FRUIT PROGRAM: FBP COORDINATES FRUIT PROGRAMS AT COOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, KIMBERLEY PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, KONNOAK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND GIBSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. THROUGH THESE PROGRAMS, STUDENTS RECEIVE APPLES AND ORANGES IN ADDITION TO THEIR BACKPACKS OF FOOD.
