A NOT-FOR-PROFIT COMMUNITY TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE AND COMMUNITY THAT BRINGS TOGETHER LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING: BUSINESSES, NOT-FOR-PROFITS, AND FOUNDATIONS TO FOSTER DIGITAL EQUITY AND INCLUSION. WINSTONNET ADVOCATES FOR AFFORDABLE HOME BROADBAND FOR FORSYTH COUNTY'S UNDERSERVED NEIGHBORHOODS AND IS DEDICATED TO ENSURING THAT ALL INDIVIDUALS IN WINSTON-SALEM AND FORSYTH COUNTY HAVE THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CAPACITY NEEDED FOR FULL PARTICIPATION IN SOCIETY, DEMOCRACY AND ECONOMY.

WINSTONNET SUPPORTS 25 COMMUNITY COMPUTER LABS IN WINSTON-SALEM/FORSYTH COUNTY WITH OVER 200 COMPUTERS FREE TO THE PUBLIC. THROUGH VARIOUS PROGRAMS THEY PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY RESIDENTS TO ATTEND TECHNOLOGY SKILLS TRAININGS, AFFORDABLE HOME COMPUTER PURCHASE PROGRAMS AND A WIDE VARIETY OF TECHNICAL SUPPORT. DURING 2019, NEARLY 60,000 PATRONS USED THE WINSTONNET COMPUTER LABS, AND THERE WERE MORE THAN 1.7 MILLION CONNECTIONS TO WINSTONNET'S PUBLIC WI-FI SERVICES. WINSTONNET'S TWO LARGEST PROGRAMS ARE FUNDED BY UNITED WAY AND THE KRAMDEN INSTITUTE; EACH GRANT FUNDS A SEPARATE PROGRAM. UNITED WAY PLACE MATTERS GRANTNETT (NEIGHBORHOODS EMPOWERED THROUGH TECHNOLOGY): WINSTONNET, THROUGH A UNITED WAY NETT GRANT PARTNERED WITH FORSYTH TECH, FORSYTH COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY, AND WINSTON-SALEM URBAN LEAGUE TO PROVIDE DIGITAL LITERACY TRAINING TO 100 UNEMPLOYED/UNDEREMPLOYED, LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS. PARTICIPANTS GRADUATED FROM A 30HR BASIC COMPUTER/EMPLOYMENT SKILLS COURSE THROUGH FORSYTH TECH'S HRD PROGRAM. EACH STUDENT PURCHASED A VERY LOW COST, REFURBISHED LAPTOP COMPUTER WITH A 1-YEAR WARRANTY AND WERE PROVIDED INFORMATION ON HOW TO OBTAIN AFFORDABLE INTERNET SERVICE OFFERED BY AT&T AND SPECTRUM. IN 2019, THE NETT PROGRAM PROVIDED MORE THAN 360 HOURS OF DIGITAL LITERACY TRAINING AND DISTRIBUTED APPROXIMATELY 100 LAPTOP COMPUTERS. WELLS FARGO/KRAMDEN GRANTGEEK-A-THON:KRAMDEN INSTITUTE AND WINSTONNET PARTNER WITH WELLS FARGO TO CONDUCT AN ANNUAL GEEK-A-THON. THIS THREE-DAY EVENT INCLUDES 150+ WELLS FARGO EMPLOYEES REFURBISHING OVER 250 DESKTOP COMPUTERS IN TWO DAYS. ON THE THIRD DAY, 125 TITLE 1 SCHOOL STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES ATTEND A SHORT TRAINING SESSION AND RECEIVE THEIR REFURBISHED DESKTOP WITH THE REMAINING COMPUTERS DISTRIBUTED TO OTHER NEEDY SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT NORTH CAROLINA. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS/FAMILIES RECEIVE A SHORT TRAINING SESSION AND INFORMATION ON HOW TO OBTAIN LOW COST INTERNET SUBSCRIPTIONS THROUGH AT&T AND SPECTRUM.
