EDUCATIONAL INTERNSHIPS - BUSINESS EDUCATION COMPACT (BEC) OFFERS YEAR-ROUND AND SUMMER EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS (HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE). ALL BEC INTERNSHIPS ARE PAID, IN-DEPTH LEARNING EXPERIENCES THAT CREATE PRACTICAL AND IMPACTFUL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN CLASSROOM AND WORKPLACE. WORK EXPERIENCES HELP STUDENTS DEVELOP A PLAN TO GRADUATEA PLAN TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS. OUR PROGRAMMING CONNECTS VOLUNTEERS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TO BUILD ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND PROVIDE WORK EXPERIENCES THAT ARE MEANINGFUL AND ENGAGING. WHETHER THE INTERN IS A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT OR A COLLEGE GRADUATE STUDENT, THE EXPERIENCE HELPS THEM MAKE INFORMED CAREER DECISIONS AND CURRICULUM CHOICES CONSISTENT WITH THEIR INTERESTS.
TEACHING AND LEARNING - BEC IS LEADING A RADICAL TRANSFORMATION OF OREGONS K-12 EDUCATION SYSTEM THROUGH PROFICIENCY-BASED TEACHING AND LEARNING, FOCUSING ON THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NEEDS OF TEACHERS. PROFICIENCY IS PROVING TO BE AN EFFECTIVE MEANS TO DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT OUTCOMES. IN A PROFICIENCY-BASED SYSTEM, STUDENTS LEARN AT THEIR OWN PACE, MOVING ON ONLY WHEN THEY HAVE MASTERED THEIR CURRENT LEARNING TARGET. THE GOAL IS NOTHING SHORT OF A DIPLOMA THAT IS A RELIABLE PREDICTOR OF POST-SECONDARY SUCCESS.
STEM CONNECT INITIATIVE - THROUGH THIS RAPIDLY-GROWING PROGRAM, COMMUNITY BUSINESSES PARTNER WITH A NEIGHBORHOOD UNDERSERVED SCHOOL TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF STEM. THE FOCUS IS ON 4TH AND 5TH GRADE CLASSROOMS WHERE RESEARCH REPORTS DECLINING INTEREST IN MATH AND SCIENCE. THE PARTNERSHIP IS DESIGNED TO MAKE LEARNING REALTO GENERATE EXCITEMENT FOR MATH AND SCIENCE EDUCATIONTHE GATEWAY TO STEM CAREERS. STUDENTS WHO SHOW POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARD MATH AND SCIENCE ARE MORE LIKELY TO TAKE ADVANCED COURSES AND PURSUE STEM MAJORS. THE GOAL IS TO ESTABLISH AN ENDURING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BUSINESS AND SCHOOL THAT IMPACTS STUDENT ATTITUDES TOWARD STEM.
