The mission of the Corvallis Public Schools Foundation is to support local schools and inspire learning for a lifetime. Our vision is that all students-regardless of race, culture, socioeconomic status, language, ability, gender, sexual orientation, or other identifiers-graduate as engaged community members, ready to contribute to their fullest potential and navigate the world's complexities.
School Programs Support: We managed more than 220 designated accounts for a variety of purposes, such as bike education, special education, outdoor school, high school career convention, graduation party, art, drama, extracurricular, foreign language, library, math, music, physical education, science, sports, technology, and robotics for the school district's 13 public schools that enrolled 6,733 students and employed 998 individuals, including 956 teachers and support staff, and an additional 42 coaches.
Academic and Enrichment Grants: We awarded 20 learning enrichment grants totaling $27,041 for innovative projects in music, theater, community service, woodshop, literacy, STEM, cooking and nutrition, health and wellness, environmental literacy and cross-cultural exchange. We spent $11,325 on a suicide prevention program called Sources of Strength, which harnesses the power of peer social networks to change unhealthy norms and culture. Through our Golden Apple Awards program, we awarded four stipends totaling $3,120 to honor outstanding teachers and staff. We also provided $95,011 in grants for summer programs for students in need of an academic or social/emotional boost. Summer programs served 500 students. Over half were students navigating poverty and a significant number were students of color and/or emerging bilingual students. Programs ranged from Kindergarten Academy, which served 97 rising kindergartners, to elementary school math and literacy programs, middle school math camps, and high school credit recovery opportunities. Through our endowed scholarship program, we awarded scholarships totaling $5,000 to help 6 high school seniors to pursue their post-secondary education.
Wrap-Around Services and Support: We supported educational access for all students, especially those navigating poverty and homelessness. Through our Student Opportunity for Success program, we provided $10,385 in support to students qualifying for free and reduced meals (approximately 2,200 students). Support included backpacks and clothing, shoes, health and hygiene supplies, food, snacks, extracurricular activity fees, after-school care, and summer childcare and enrichment opportunities. In addition, we provided emergency support, rent money and transportation for 200 students who were houseless, for a total of $49,953. When the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, we redoubled our efforts to address students' basic needs during school closures. Staff fulfilled 584 requests for food, 119 requests for laundry cards, 424 requests for grocery gift cards, and 480 requests for cleaning supplies, personal hygiene products, and school supplies. All told, services reached nearly 1,200 people from March 15 to June 30, for a total of $44,133.
