Organizations Filed Purposes:
To promote an ecologically, economically, and socially healthy city and county through democratic decision-making processes consistent with our guiding objectives.
Strengthening Housing and Transportation Options, Protecting Natural Resources, Fostering a Secure Local Food System, and Creating a Healthy Community: The Housing Action Team, in an effort to address homelessness, was a key partner in the establishment of SafePlace, a new program providing transitional housing in parking lots of local churches, and coordinated the design and building of a model microshelter and raised funds for the production of additional units. The Transportation Action Team provided bike valet services for nearly 500 attendees at Septembeerfest and Fall Festival (the volunteers transported the fencing and racks by bike), organized the 2nd annual PARK(ing) Day (with parking spaces at 6 different sites transformed into activity areas to heighten awareness about the use of public spaces), and sponsored EV house parties attended by 100 people to share the benefits of transitioning to electric vehicles. The Land Use Action Team hosted "Parking in Corvallis: A Community Conversation", the first in a series to identify parking issues and explore solutions. The Water Action Team continued regeneration projects, such as planting more than 1,500 native shrubs and wetland plants at the Dunawi Creek Regeneration site, completed construction of a new filtering wetland adjacent to Starker Arts Park, and facilitated the purchase by a private landowner of a quarter-acre of riparian buffer along the Mill Race for its protection. The Food Action Team continued to encourage more families and young people to connect with their local farms and the products they offer, by coordinating the 10th annual Local Eats Week as part of the "Eat 40% Local" campaign (featuring local ingredients prepared by chefs at 14 area restaurants), distributing "Simply Seasonal" recipes and local food e-newsletter to thousands of people through social media and at the Farmers' Market, distributing the 10th edition of the Corvallis Garden Resource Guide to 1,000 current and prospective gardeners, and sponsoring Edible Garden Tours that featured community garden plots. The Health and Human Services Action Team continued its Green Cleaning Campaign to promote safe alternatives to hazardous household products and also continued its Indoor Air Quality Monitoring project that monitored 52 homes for a week and provided reports and tips to residents for improving indoor air quality. The Natural Areas Action Team coordinated the 10th Annual Natural Areas Celebration Week, engaging community members in appreciation of the local natural areas through more than 25 unique events. The Economic Vitality Team co-sponsored the 9th annual Buy Local First campaign which encouraged community members to "think local first" when making purchases.
Encouraging Waste Prevention: The Coalition continued the No Food Left Behind - Corvallis program, which reached thousands of people through Farmers' Market outreach, school presentations, and online and printed materials that offered tips for food purchasing, storage, and preparation. The Waste Prevention Action Team also distributed thousands of copies of the Corvallis Area ReUse Directory at 70 locations, keeping countless perfectly good items from being landfilled, and our 92 Recycling Block Captains delivered waste prevention information to nearly 4,000 Corvallis-area households every 4 months. The Coalition supported Oregon Green Schools certification at our local schools by assisting with waste audits, cafeteria composting programs, and school gardens. In addition, the Corvallis-Albany Zero Waste Group continued to support individuals (at the group's social events and through educational outreach at local community events) with reducing their negative impact on the planet-moving away from a linear, single-use, disposable lifestyle and toward more purposeful choices and habits.
Engaging Community: As a network of 381 partner organizations (businesses, nonprofit organizations, faith communities, educational institutions, and local government units) and hundreds of individual volunteers, the Coalition provided grassroots leadership, inspiration, resources, and opportunities for collaboration in working on sustainability issues. The Coalition encouraged community involvement and interaction by inviting the entire community to its annual and quarterly meetings, where attendees had the opportunity to network and share information about sustainability issues, and numerous presenters among the partner organizations and 12 action teams presented their sustainability accomplishments. The monthly Sustainability Events Calendar also provided opportunities for community members to learn about our partners' activities. The Coalition continued to expand and deepen its collaborative efforts with partner organizations and participated at other local events. In March 2019 the Coalition hosted its annual Sustainability Fair and Town Hall event, which was attended by more than 500 people, to continue highlighting the sustainability efforts of the community with the "Community Scrapbook" slide show, and to prompt discussions among the participants in small groups on local sustainability topics. The Sustainability Fair featured local food, local musicians, and more than 50 hands-on sustainability exhibits. The featured speaker at the Town Hall event, Mary Wood, energized attendees by challenging them to support the climate action work of Our Children's Trust.
