Organizations Filed Purposes: We are a nonprofit scientific research organization focused on providing sound solutions to avian conservation issues. Our mission is to provide evidence-based scientific findings that may be used by federal and state agencies, conservation managers, and communities to inform decision making.

During fiscal 2020, we conducted scientific research on the federally-endangered Cape Sable seaside sparrow (CSSS) in the Florida Everglades. Our research included demographic monitoring of CSSS populations in Everglades National Park and the Southern Glades located in Homestead, FL. Funding was provided by partners including the National Park Service - Everglades National Park, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the South Florida Water Management District. Demographic data including nest monitoring data, mark-recapture data, and spatial data were collected, summarized, and provided to partner agencies to inform management decisions made as part of ongoing Everglades restoration. We presented our results in periodic progress reports and annual reports to agencies; we also presented our findings at scientific meetings for agency staff and at other scientific meeting with broader audiences.

During fiscal 2020, we conducted scientific research on bird populations at Powell Butte Nature Park located in Portland, OR studying the impacts of habitat restoration at the park. The study has two separate but related components: 1) a demographic study of grassland birds breeding at the site, and 2) a volunteer community science study of avian diversity and abundance designed to complement the demographic study while engaging the community with scientific research. Demographic data including nest monitoring data, mark-recapture data, and spatial data were collected, summarized, and provided to our partner, Portland Parks and Recreation. Community science data were also shared with Portland Parks and Recreation, and with our other partner on the community science project, the Johnson Creek Watershed Council. We presented our results in our annual permitting reports; we also presented our findings at scientific meetings and less formal meetings with a broader audience which included volunteers and other community members.
