Organizations Filed Purposes:
To transform Mt. Hood National Forest into a place where natural processes prevail, where wildlife thrives and where local communities have a social, cultural, and economic investment in its restoration and preservation.
OUTREACH AND EDUCATION PROGRAM: Bark provides education to the public about forest law, policy, and ecology at free events in our office, virtually, and in the forest. Our street outreach team informs the public about what is happening in Mt. Hood National Forest. In 2019, Bark reached 35,000 people with our outreach team. Bark's regular email newsletter includes more than 25,000 recipients and covers information about forest ecology, public land policy, upcoming events, and ways for people to engage with the Forest Service.
FOREST WATCH PROGRAM: Bark works with our volunteers and the general public to inform policy making at the US Forest Service. In 2019 we worked to engage the public on issues of wildfire ecology and management and destructive, industrial forest practices such as roadbuilding and commercial logging. Staff and volunteers gather site specific information via groundtruthing to provide input on proposed Forest Service projects through the National Environmental Policy Act. Bark volunteers contributed more than 3,500 hours surveying proposed timber sales and monitoring the impacts of roads and logging in Mt. Hood National Forest. Areas of work in 2019 also included beaver habitat surveys and restoration.
RESTORE MT. HOOD PROGRAM: In 2019, Bark is proactively advocating for updates to the Mt. Hood Forest Management Plan through workshops on forest management and climate change. Staff and volunteers manage a website, monthly meetings, community presentations and actions directed at Forest Service leadership.
