Organizations Filed Purposes: THE BLACK PARENT INITIATIVE EDUCATES AND MOBILIZES THE PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS OF BLACK AND MULTI-ETHNIC CHILDREN TO ENSURE THEY ACHIEVE SUCCESS. FAMILIES OF BLACK AND MULTI-ETHNIC CHILDREN WILL BREAK GENERATIONAL CYCLES, ACHIEVING FINANCIAL, EDUCATIONAL, HEALTH AND SPIRITUAL SUCCESS AND WELL-BEING.

THE BLACK PARENT INITIATIVE EDUCATES AND MOBILIZES THE PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS OF BLACK AND MULTI-ETHNIC CHILDREN TO ENSURE THEY ACHIEVE SUCCESS.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION, TRAINING AND OUTREACH. FOCUSES ON LITERACY, CULTURALLY SPECIFIC PARENTING AND ADVOCACY. BPI ACHIEVED THESE GOALS THROUGH OUR WORK WITH PARENTS AND STUDENTS AT THREE PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND THROUGH OUR SPONSORSHIP OF A PARENT COUNCIL FOCUSED ON PARENT VOICE AND ADVOCACY. IN ADDITION, BPI HELD ITS ANNUAL BOOK FAIR AND SPONSORED A MOVIE NIGHT FOR PORTLAND PARKS AND RECREATION. THESE ACTIVITIES SUPPORT LITERACY AND FAMILY/COMMUNITY CONNECTION, RESPECTIVELY. FY2019-2020 SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMMING FOCUSED ON STUDENT PERSPECTIVE. BPI HELD 28 STUDENT AFFINITY GROUPS WITH A TOTAL ATTENDANCE OF 496 STUDENT-MONTHS OF SERVICES FROM OCTOBER, 2019, THROUGH JUNE 2020; THERE WERE 16 PARENT GROUPS OFFERED WITH 64 PARENT-MONTHS OF SERVICES. BPI FACILITATED THE DISTRIBUTION OF 470 CULTURALLY SPECIFIC BOOKS TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES THROUGH OUR BOOK FAIR, ANNUAL HOLIDAY EVENT AND OTHER AVENUES. 297 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE BOOK FAIR AND 333 ATTENDED THE MOVIE IN THE PARK. ADDITIONAL OUTREACH ACTIVITIES INCLUDED ATTENDANCE AT 5 OTHER COMMUNITY EVENTS WHERE WE REACHED AT LEAST 250 MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC.

FIRST 1,000 DAYS FAMILY PROGRAMS. BPI'S HOME VISITING MODEL COMBINES RELATIONSHIP BASED INTENSIVE HOME VISITS WITH GROUP-BASED SUPPORT. THESE JOINT EFFORTS IMPROVE PARENTING SKILLS, CREATE SAFE FAMILY ENVIRONMENTS, STRENGTHEN PARENTS' CULTURAL IDENTITY, BUILD FAMILY-COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND MOTIVATES PARENTS TO ATTAIN GREATER SELF-SUFFICIENCY. STAFF SERVED 31 FAMILIES AND PROVIDED 514.5 HOURS OF HOME VISITING, GROUP, AND OTHER DIRECT SERVICE TO FAMILIES; PROVIDED 306 HOME VISITS. PROGRAM ALSO SUPPORTED FAMILIES DURING PREGNANCY WITH BPI STAFF AND CONTRACTORS WHO ARE TRAINED AS DOULAS. 31 BABIES WERE BORN AND BPI-TRAINED DOULAS PROVIDED OVER 50 PRENATAL VISITS AND 16 POSTPARTUM VISITS. BPI SUBSIDIZED TRAINING OF 3 BLACK DOULAS.

FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER PROVIDES CULTURALLY RELEVANT INFORMATION, CLASSES, GROUPS AND ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENTS. 19 INDIVIDUALS WERE SERVED VIA BPI'S EMPLOYMENT SERVICES.
