CALDERA'S VISION IS A WORLD THAT EMBRACES THE POWER OF CREATIVITY IN ALL PEOPLE. CALDERA SERVES AS CATALYST FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF UNDERSERVED YOUTH THROUGH INNOVATIVE YEAR-ROUND ART AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS.
A NONPROFIT ARTS ORGANIZATION, CALDERA SERVES AS A CATALYST FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF UNDERSERVED YOUTH FROM UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES THROUGH INNOVATIVE, YEAR-ROUND ART AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS. CALDERA NURTURES INDIVIDUAL CREATIVITY TO IGNITE SELF-EXPRESSION AND TRANSFORM THE WAY YOUNG PEOPLE ENGAGE IN THEIR LIVES, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES. ANNUALLY, CALDERA WORKS WITH HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY OF MENTORS, ARTISTS, ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALISTS, ALUMNI, SCHOOLS, AND OTHER PARTNERS. ALL OF CALDERA'S YOUTH PROGRAMS ARE PROVIDED FOR FREE TO THE STUDENTS, FAMILIES AND SCHOOLS SERVED. IN 2015, CALDERA RECEIVED A NATIONAL ARTS AND HUMANITIES YOUTH PROGRAM AWARD FROM FIRST LADY, MICHELLE OBAMA, RECOGNIZING CALDERA AS ONE THE TOP YOUTH ARTS PROGRAMS IN THE NATION.
CALDERA'S ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM SUPPORTS OUR CREATIVE COMMUNITY WITH TIME AND SPACE AT OUR ARTS CENTER NEAR SISTERS, OREGON. FROM DECEMBER THROUGH MARCH, CALDERA'S TWO- TO THREE-AND-A-HALF-WEEK RESIDENCIES PROVIDE 50 ARTISTS, CREATIVES, AND CULTURAL WORKERS IN ALL DISCIPLINES WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD SKILLS, RELATIONSHIPS, AND PROJECTS THAT INSPIRE GROWTH, COMBAT OPPRESSION, AND ACTIVATE CHANGE FOR CULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE, WHILE DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM EACH OTHER AND THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT SURROUNDING OUR ARTS CENTER. RESIDENTS ALSO PROVIDE INSPIRING, CULTURALLY-RELEVANT LEARNING EXPERIENCES TO CALDERA'S YOUTH PROGRAM STUDENTS, AND TO CENTRAL OREGON'S GENERAL PUBLIC. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O.AT EACH RESIDENCY'S COMPLETION, OUR OPEN STUDIOS ALLOW THE PUBLIC TO VIEW ARTISTS' WORKS IN PROGRESS AND INTERACT WITH ARTISTS. WE ALSO SUPPORT OUR ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE AFTER THEIR FIRST RESIDENCY THROUGH ALUMNI MEETUPS, ADDITIONAL RESIDENCIES, TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES, AND, OCCASIONALLY, PRESENTING SUPPORT.IN MARCH OF 2020, COVID-19 FORCED CALDERA ARTS TO PIVOT ALL YOUTH PROGRAMMING TO A VIRTUAL MODEL. MENTOR STAFF BEGAN WORKING REMOTELY, OFFERING WEEKLY VIRTUAL HANGOUTS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN STUDENT CONNECTIONS. PLANNING BEGAN IN APRIL FOR A VIRTUAL SUMMER CAMP IN LIEU OF OUR TRADITIONAL OVERNIGHT CAMP.THE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM'S MARCH SESSION WAS CUT SHORT BY SEVERAL DAYS TO ALLOW ARTISTS TO TRAVEL HOME SAFELY BEFORE QUARANTINE. IN MAY, THE ARTS CENTER REOPENED TO HOST SEVERAL INDIVIDUAL ARTIST RESIDENCIES. BETWEEN MARCH AND JUNE 2020, STAFF STARTED WORK ON COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS AND DRAFTED A COMMUNICABLE DISEASE POLICY FOR FUTURE ON-SITE EVENTS AT THE ARTS CENTER.
