SPONSORED PROJECTS PROGRAM: AFTER SPONSORING OUR FIRST PROJECT IN 2017/2018 WE SAW A NEED FOR MORE IN-DEPTH SUPPORT FOR EMERGING PROJECT LEADERS AND COMMUNITIES AND EXPANDED THE PROGRAM IN 2018/2019. THIS PROGRAM'S DEVELOPMENT CONTINUED IN 2019/2020 WITH NEW PROJECT LEADERS AND ESTABLISHED PROJECTS IN PUBLIC INTEREST TECHNOLOGY, OPEN DATA, AND OPEN RESEARCH. IN 2019/2020 THE SPONSORED PROJECTS PROGRAM CONSISTED OF THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS: PREREVIEW (OPEN ACCESS AND EDUCATION), OPEN REVIEW (OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE, OPEN ACCESS REVIEW PROCESSES FOR SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS), MEASUREMENT LAB (OPEN CIVIC DATA SUPPORTING INTERNET ACCESS), INVEST IN OPEN INFRASTRUCTURE (ADVOCACY FOR OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE AND OPEN KNOWLEDGE INFRASTRUCTURE), CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE OOPEN REFINE (AN OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE PROJECT FOCUSED ON MAKING IT EASIER TO WORK WITH DATA), STENCILA (OPEN SOURCE REPRODUCIBLE DOCUMENTS). WE WORKED WITH EACH PROJECT TO DEVELOP THEIR PROJECT STRATEGY TO MEET GOALS.

FOUNDATIONAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM - THE DAT PROJECT: IN 2018/2019, DAT CREATED A CONSORTIUM OF PROJECTS USING THE SOFTWARE TO STEWARD THE COMMUNITY FORWARD AND ENCOURAGE COLLABORATION AND DEVELOP COMMON GOALS. IN 2019/2020, THE DAT COMMUNITY CONTINUED WORK ON PROJECTS RELATED TO DOCUMENTATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE DATA SHARING PROTOCOL AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH.

COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITIES PROGRAM - EVENT FUND: FROM OUR EXPERIENCE AS COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS IS OPEN DATA AND DATA SCIENCE, WE SAW A NEED TO SUPPORT EVENT ORGANIZERS WITH FUNDING AND TRAINING TO RUN INCLUSIVE EVENTS IN DATA SCIENCE. IN 2019/2020 WE PLANNED THE LAUNCH OF THE EVENT FUND, A COMMUNITY GOVERNED GRANT MAKING AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM SUPPORTING EVENTS AND ORGANIZERS IN DATA SCIENCE. THIS PROGRAM AWARDS GRANTS THROUGH A TRANSPARENT PROCESS TO PEOPLE ORGANIZING EVENTS THAT OFFER DATA SCIENCE TRAINING. GRANTEES JOIN A COHORT AND ARE SUPPORTED WITH PROGRAMMING AND MENTORING TO DEVELOP IMPACTFUL AND INCLUSIVE EVENTS.
