We are a united community helping stabilize and transform children and their families experiencing homelessness in Beaverton. Our main focus is to help our guest families get back into permanent, sustainable housing and employment as quickly as possible. While in our program, guests will receive food, shelter, and comprehensive support services. Guest's families will also have the opportunity to develop enduring life skills through individualized case management by staff and through personal mentoring by volunteers.
Family Promise of Beaverton is a volunteer-driven organization providing temporary shelter, food, and mentoring for families suffering homelessness within the Beaverton School District. Our success rate of getting families into stable housing is 85%, with an average stay of 90 days. Through partnerships with volunteer hosting sites at community organizations, we provide shelter and meals to families in our program. We also provide support through case management and family advocacy to help our guest families find childcare, healthcare, as well as overcoming barriers to stable housing. The three main components of the program are Case Management, Hosting, and a Day Center.
Case Management: A case manager helps our families create a workable plan to overcome barriers that have prevented them from sustainable housing in the past. The plan may include steps to finding community resources for medical and dental care or childcare. Many adults enter our program underemployed, so the case manager works with them to maximize their employment opportunities. Through regularly scheduled meetings and assessments, the case manager tracks progress to the plan for each family. During these meetings they may discuss ongoing issues or concerns including: family budget monitoring through the examination of income, expenses and continued debt reduction; employment; parenting; trauma informed care; and true family emergencies. As an extension of our overall program, we continue case management services with families who have moved into stable housing. Many of our families do not have a family or community support system. We can help these families become self-sufficient and at the same time help them to integrate in their new community and begin to develop a community support system. Our success rate of getting families into stable housing is 85%, with an average stay of 90 days.
Hosting : There are thirteen hosting locations, comprised of churches and community organizations, providing housing and meals on a volunteer basis for a week at a time multiple times per year. We opened our doors to host our first family on April 30, 2018. From that day through the end of 2019, we provided 6209 bed nights and 18,627 meals for the families in our program. Volunteers are the heart of Family Promise of Beaverton's Hosting. Approximately 500 volunteers in 2019 provided a variety of services: cooking & serving meals, playing with children or helping them with homework, and staying overnight with our guests at the host locations. During weeks when no host location is available, we check them into a motel/hotel and provide meals or gift cards to local grocery stores or restaurants. Insurance and depreciation costs of our van and trailer used to convey guests and materials to and from host locations are included.
Day Center: Our Day Center provides families a "home base" where they can store belongings, access showers and laundry facilities, use computers, and have a mailing address to use as their own. It is a place for families to gather together to play a game, talk, read, do homework, or just "be" in a safe haven especially during extreme weather. Though the space where our Day Center and offices are located is generously provided by Sunset Presbyterian Church, we received an incredible opportunity to purchase a house to be our new Day House We began a capital campaign in September 2019 for purchase of the house in March 2020. The house is located on a rare large lot in central Beaverton in a residential neighborhood next to a park. It is within walking distance to schools, parks, library, several bus routes, and community services. The house is surrounded by some of the most affordable apartment complexes in Beaverton, easy for our guests when they graduate to stay connected to us. Moving to a central location along several public transportation routes will widen our access to the community.
