THE MISSION OF THE FOREST PARK CONSERVANCY IS TO PROTECT AND FOSTER THE ECOLOGICAL HEALTH OF FOREST PARK, MAINTAIN AND ENHANCE THE PARK'S EXTENSIVE TRAILS NETWORK, AND INSPIRE COMMUNITY APPRECIATION AND FUTURE STEWARDSHIP OF THIS ICONIC URBAN FOREST AS A GIFT FOR GENERATIONS.
THE GREATER FOREST PARK CONSERVATION INITIATIVE (GFPCI) IS A 20-YEAR, LONG-TERM, COLLABORATIVE STRATEGY TO RESTORE AND PROTECT OVER 15,000 ACRES OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LAND WITHIN THE GREATER FOREST PARK ECOSYSTEM. THIS INITIATIVE WILL ADDRESS THE SERIOUS THREATS TO THE HEALTH OF THIS ECOSYSTEM BY BRINGING TOGETHER PUBLIC, PRIVATE AND NON-PROFIT PARTNERS AS WELL AS COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS TO RESTORE THE PARK AND THE SURROUNDING AREA. THE PRIMARY GOALS OF THE GFPCI PROGRAM ARE TO: 1) PROTECT AND IMPROVE HYDROLOGIC PROCESSES AND WATER QUALITY; 2) PROTECT AND IMPROVE BIODIVERSITY CORRIDORS BETWEEN FOREST PARK, THE COAST RANGE AND THE WILLAMETTE RIVER; 3) MAINTAIN AND IMPROVE FORESTS TO SUPPORT DIVERSITY, STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY, AND COMPLEXITY; 4) MAINTAIN AND IMPROVE NATIVE WILDLIFE DIVERSITY; AND TO BUILD STRONG COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR THE LONG-TERM HEALTH OF THE PARK. WITH THE GREEN JOBS AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, FPC ALONG WITH ITS PARTNERS AT WEST MULTNOMAH SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT AND COLUMBIA LAND TRUST HOSTED 5 BIPOC YOUNG ADULTS FOR A ONE-YEAR PAID INTERNSHIP FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, FOCUSED ON PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, INCLUDING HANDS-ON LEARNING AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES. THROUGH OUR RESTORATION EFFORTS WITHIN AND AROUND FOREST PARK, FPC TREATED NEARLY 500 TREES OF CANOPY WEEDS, PLANTED APPROXIMATELY 4,000 NATIVE PLANTS, TREES AND SHRUBS, AND TREATED FOR RESTORATION APPROXIMATELY 250 ACRES.THE FOREST PARK CONSERVANCY'S STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM'S INTENTION IS TO INSPIRE ACTION AND ENSURE FOREST PARK IS PROTECTED FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS. A LOT OF THAT WORK IS ACHIEVED THROUGH OUR VOLUNTEERS, DURING WORK PARTIES, OR WITH PARTICIPATION IN OUR VOLUNTEER CREW LEADERS PROGRAM, RAPID RESPONSE PROGRAM, DISCOVERY HIKES SERIES, AND FOREST PARK AMBASSADORS PROGRAM. COVID-19 IMPACTED FPC'S CAPACITY TO IMPLEMENT MOST OF OUR STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMS, HOWEVER WE WERE STILL ABLE TO COMPLETE 42 VOLUNTEER EVENTS WITH APPROXIMATELY 1,250 VOLUNTEERS, ACCRUING APPROXIMATELY 1,347 VOLUNTEER HOURS.
