Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE FUND FOR PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS (FUND FOR PPS) IS TO SUPPORT PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS, THE LARGEST DISTRICT IN THE STATE OF OREGON SERVING CLOSE TO 50,000 STUDENTS, BY BUILDING A ROBUST GENEROSITY NETWORK, STEWARDING STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS & PARTNERSHIPS, AND MANAGING THE LOCAL SCHOOL FOUNDATIONS.

SUPPORT TO PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

IN 2019, PPS LOCAL SCHOOL FOUNDATIONS RAISED NEARLY $4.65 MILLION, OF WHICH $1.25 MILLION HAS BEEN GENEROUSLY SET ASIDE TO BE INVESTED IN ADDITIONAL PPS SCHOOLS IN THE FORM OF THE PPS PARENT FUND AWARDS. I AM EXCITED TO SHARE THAT 53 SCHOOLSINCLUDING BOTH PIONEER AND THE COMMUNITY TRANSITION PROGRAMWILL RECEIVE GRANTS RANGING FROM $12,500 TO $45,000 FOR THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR. THESE FLEXIBLE DOLLARS WILL CONTINUE TO ACCELERATE PROGRESS TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY'S COMMITMENT TO RACIAL EQUITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE AND MOVE PPS FORWARD TOWARD REALIZING ITS VISIONPPS REIMAGINED. BEFORE MAKING THESE AWARDS, THE FUND FOR PPS BOARD OF DIRECTORSALONGSIDE PPS STAFFCOMBED THROUGH HISTORICAL DATA ON AWARDS TO SCHOOLS, HEARD INPUT FROM PARENT DONORS AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS, AND EXAMINED PATTERNS IN PAST AWARDS. THOUGHTFULLY, WE WRESTLED WITH HOW BEST TO DETERMINE WHICH SCHOOLS WOULD RECEIVE GRANTS AND HOW TO DIVIDE THE OVERALL FUNDS BETWEEN SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS OF VARYING SIZES AND STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS. IN AWARDING GRANTS THIS YEAR, THE FUND FOR PPS IS USING TWO COMBINED CRITERIA TO DETERMINE ELIGIBILITY FOR AN AWARD: TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A GRANT A SCHOOL OR PROGRAM MUST ENROLL 1) AT LEAST 40% OF STUDENTS IDENTIFIED AS HISTORICALLY UNDERSERVED[1] AND 2) AT LEAST 15% OF STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR FREE MEALS BY DIRECT CERTIFICATION[2]. IN A DEPARTURE FROM PAST YEARS, WE DID NOT CONSIDER A SCHOOL'S OVERALL FINANCIAL DATA AS A FACTOR IN ELIGIBILITY FOR AN AWARD. AS WE EXAMINED PAST AWARD YEARS, IT BECAME CLEAR THAT CONSIDERING FINANCIAL DATA HAD RESULTED IN INCONSISTENCIES YEAR TO YEAR, AS THE BOON OF A PPS PARENT FUND GRANT IN ONE YEAR COULD MEAN A SCHOOL SERVING A HIGH COUNT OF HISTORICALLY UNDERSERVED STUDENTS MIGHT BE DISQUALIFIED THE FOLLOWING YEAR. THIS YEAR, USING JUST TWO DATA POINTSPERCENTAGE OF HISTORICALLY UNDERSERVED STUDENTS AND A SCHOOL'S PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR FREE MEALS THROUGH DIRECT CERTIFICATIONENABLES US TO IDENTIFY THE SCHOOLS WITH THE GREATEST NEED FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDS, PROVIDES CLEAR TRANSPARENCY, AND, WE BELIEVE, WILL LEAD TO GREATER CONSISTENCY YEAR TO YEAR.

IN MARCH 2020, THE FUND FOR PPS ESTABLISHED THE CORONAVIRUS RELIEF FUND TO RESPOND TO THE EMERGING NEEDS OF PPS STUDENTS AND FAMILES DURING THE WORLDWIDE PANDEMIC THAT PLUNGED PPS INTO UNPRECEDENTED TIMES. CREATING A VEHICLE THROUGH WHICH DONORS COULD GIVE TO SUPPORT THE PPS COMMUNITY, WE WERE ABLE TO RAISE FUNDS AND PROVIDE EMERGENCY RELIEF FAMILIES FACING MULTIPE BARRIERS.BY JUNE 30, 2020, THE FUND FOR PPS PROVIDED NEARLY 1,500 $100 GROCERY GIFT CARDS TO PPS FAMILIES MOST IN NEED, REACHING MORE THAN 2,000 STUDENTS. WE'VE HELPED DOZENS OF FAMILIES CONNECT TO THE INTERNET SO THAT STUDENTS CAN ENGAGE WITH THEIR PEERS AND PPS STAFF. EDUCATORS, ADMINISTRATORS, AND SCHOOL STAFF IDENTIFIED THE STUDENTS MOST IN NEED OF THIS SUPPORT. THIS IS A QUICK SNAPSHOT OF WHO WE'VE SERVED: -68% OF FAMILIES HAVE STUDENTS WHO ATTEND TITLE I SCHOOLS AND/OR SCHOOLS DESIGNATED FOR TARGETED OR COMPREHENSIVE IMPROVEMENT-88% OF GIFT CARD RECIPIENTS REPORTED FOOD INSECURITY -28% ARE HOMELESS OR AT RISK OF BECOMING HOMELESS-40% REPORTED THAT A FAMILY MEMBER HAS LOST EMPLOYMENT DUE TO COVID-19-84% OF GIFT CARDS WENT TO FAMILIES WITH STUDENTS OF COLOR
