Good Samaritan Foundation has encouraged charitable giving from the community since its establishment in 1969. The Foundation supports the advancement of research, education, and technology in medical science at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center.Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center, founded in 1875 by the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, stands in the heart of northwest Portland as one of the Pacific Northwests oldest and most advanced medical centers. Legacy Good Samaritan provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient services, with special emphasis on its centers of excellence, including:* Legacy Cancer Institute* Devers Eye Institute * Emergency and Critical Care* Family Birth Center* The Community Clinic* Diabetes & Weight Management Services* Legacy Hospice Services* Rehabilitation Institute of OregonIn fiscal year 2020, philanthropic contributions supported programs in four major areas:Patient Care $3,049,202Research $2,437,310Education and Training $ 746,402Community Benefit & Other Hospital Programs $ 23,727Some of the specific projects funded in this year were as follows: Funded general and specialty care diagnosis, procedures and surgeries for ophthalmology patients without insurance coverage or financial means. Provided emergency medications, durable medical equipment, transitional housing, and other health-related supplies to uninsured, under-insured, and low-income patients. Supported navigation and counselling services for chronic pain and transgender patients. Supported the development of an interdisciplinary clinic for patients with congestive heart failure. Supported complementary therapies for cancer patients including nutrition education, exercise, art therapy and yoga classes. Purchased wheelchairs and seating systems for outpatients who do not have insurance or the financial resources to buy necessary equipment to help avoid further health problems. Supported complementary therapies for cancer patients including art therapy, yoga, Tai Chi, massage and acupuncture. Supported innovative research to identify ways to improve outcomes and experiences for patients suffering from Parkinsons, Alzheimers, cancer, epilepsy, stroke, diabetes and glaucoma. Awarded scholarships for individuals pursuing undergraduate and graduate nursing degrees. Supported in-hospital programs for patients at end of life. Provided support for Legacy Hospice Services. Supported medical education for internal medicine residents and specialty fellowship trainees. Supported the development of a teaching kitchen for the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program. Purchased specialized mammography paddles for the breast health center.
