THE GREEN SPORTS ALLIANCE LEVERAGES THE CULTURAL AND MARKET INFLUENCE OF SPORTS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY, SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES WHERE WE LIVE AND PLAY.
THE GREEN SPORTS ALLIANCE MOVED FORWARD WITH ITS GOALS TO FURTHER GROW THE GREENING MOVEMENT IN 2020 ALTHOUGH SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED BY THE COVID-19 CRISIS. BELOW ARE A FEW HIGHLIGHTS AND CHALLENGES OF 2020. THE ALLIANCE HELD ITS ANNUAL SUMMIT PIVOTING TO A VIRTUAL PLATFORM AND SHIFTING THE DATE TO OCTOBER. WE FOCUSED ON PLAYING FOR THE NEXT GENERATION: GAME ON! THE FUTURE OF SPORTS AND SUSTAINABILITY, SUCCESSES AND LESSONS LEARNED IN THE SPORTS GREENING MOVEMENT, WITH A FOCUS ON COVID-19 HEALTH AND WELLNESS BEST PRACTICES, SOCIAL INJUSTICE THE RESPONSE TO INSTITUTIONAL RACISM, AND CLIMATE ACTION. ATTENDEES LEFT WITH TANGIBLE TAKEAWAYS TO FURTHER PROMOTE HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES WHERE WE LIVE AND PLAY. THE VIRTUAL SUMMIT INCLUDED 548, ATTENDEES, INCLUDING 73 SPEAKERS, 20 SPONSORS/EXHIBITORS/COMMUNITY PARTNERS, AND 14 COUNTRIES REPRESENTED OVERALL. ATTENDEE FEEDBACK WAS VERY POSITIVE, HOWEVER SPONSORSHIP DOLLARS CONTINUED TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY DOWN FROM PRIOR YEARS DUE TO THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND NEGATIVE ECONOMIC IMPACT TO SPORTS. WE ALSO SAW A DECREASE IN SUMMIT SPONSORSHIP DOLLARS AND DECLINE IN CORPORATE MEMBERSHIPS OF EXISTING PARTNERS. THE EIDL AND PPP FUNDING SUPPORTED EXISTING PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES TO MEMBERS THROUGHOUT 2020, INCLUDING 10 WEBINARS; RELEASED OUR READY TO PLAY: COVID-19 REENTRY TO SPORTS PLAYBOOK 1.0 AND 2.0 VERSIONS. ALLIANCE MEMBERS, BOARD AND STAFF PARTICIPATED AND CONTRIBUTED TO THE CONTENT OF SEVERAL 2020 VIRTUAL CONFERENCES AND CREATED NEW PARTNERSHIPS WITH USGBC ARC, IWBI, AND GREEN BIZ.THE GREEN SPORTS ALLIANCE ADDED A FEW NEW MEMBERS IN 2020, WITH THE TOTAL NUMBER OF TEAMS, VENUES, LEAGUES, UNIVERSITIES, FANS, AND EVENTS STILL EXCEEDING 400 BUT MANY GOING INTO A MEMBERSHIP HOLDING PATTERN DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC.THE ALLIANCE ADDED A FEW ADDITIONAL MEMBERS TO THE CORPORATE MEMBERS NETWORK, WHICH CONVENES BUSINESS LEADERS WITH A MAJOR GOAL OF PROMOTING HEALTH AND WELLNESS TO CREATE SAFE OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENTS IN THE SPORTS VENUES TO GET SPORTS UP AND RUNNING AND FANS BACK IN THE STANDS SAFELY. 2020 HELD STAFFING TRANSITIONS, INCLUDING THE FURLOUGH AND EVENTUAL ELIMINATION OF TWO STAFF POSITIONS: DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AND MANAGER OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN MARCH. IN JANUARY WE HIRED A STRATEGIC REVENUE GENERATING POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF SUSTAINABLE EVENTS AND ANALYTICS THUS AT THE END OF 2020, THE ALLIANCE HAD FOUR FULL TIME STAFF MEMBERS. MEMBER RETENTION FELL AND SAW A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN MEMBERSHIP PAYMENTS DUE TO THE COVID-19 CRISIS AND THE LOSS OF REVENUE OF THE ALLIANCE MEMBERS. SPONSORSHIP ALSO SAW A MAJOR DECREASE ALONG WITH REDUCTION OF SPONSORSHIP REVENUE OF THE VIRTUAL SUMMIT. THE EIDL AND PPP WAS APPLIED AND NEEDED TO CONTINUE OPERATIONS. AGING A/R REMAINED HIGHER THAN DESIRED IN 2020, BECAUSE OF CHALLENGES COLLECTING MEMBERSHIP DUES AND SPONSORSHIP FUNDS DUE TO COVID-19 CRISIS AND ECONOMIC HARDSHIP OF THE ALLIANCE SPORTS MEMBERS. CONSEQUENTLY, THE ALLIANCE HAD TO WRITE OFF $16,500 IN UNPAID INVOICES FROM 2019 AND 2020.FURTHERMORE, THE FOLLOWING PARTNERS WHO, THROUGH THEIR GENEROSITY, HAVE DONATED IN-KIND RENTS OR SERVICES TOWARDS OUR MISSION:LNS CAPTIONING - $10,991.50, WEBINAR CAPTURING SERVICES FOR SUMMIT & WEBINARSSOUTH POLE - $2,500, CARBON EMISSION OFFSETSFURTHERMORE, THE FOLLOWING PARTNER AND SCHEDULE B CONTRIBUTOR WHO, THROUGH THEIR GENEROSITY, HAVE DONATED TO HELP SUPPORT OUR MISSION:ONE TREE PLANTED - $10,000, PROMOTIONAL ITEMS
