Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF LEACH BOTANICAL GARDEN TO MAINTAIN AND ENHANCE LIVING COLLECTIONS OF PLANTS FOR THE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION AND TO PRESERVE THE LEGACY OF THE GARDEN'S FOUNDERS, JOHN AND LILLA LEACH.

BOTANY & HORTICULTURE - THE CAPITAL PROJECT IN THE UPPER GARDEN BEGAN IN THE FALL OF 2019. HORTICULTURE STAFF WERE KEY PARTICIPANTS IN REMOVING PLANTS FOR SALVAGE IN ADVANCE OF DEMOLITION. THEY PROVIDED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO THE CONTRACTOR REGARDING IRRIGATION, NEEDED CONDITIONS FOR PROPAGATION, SOILS, AND TIMING OF PLANTING. PLANT ACQUISITION WAS ALSO PART OF THE WORK FOCUS, INCLUDING PROPAGATION OF PLANTS FOR THE PROJECT'S WOODLAND SLOPES. REVIEW OF EXISTING HORTICULTURAL POINTS OF FOCUS CONTINUED--FOR EXAMPLE ROCK GARDEN WAS REVISED. INTERNSHIPS CONTINUE AS WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO IMPLEMENT REASONABLE PROTOCOLS FOR STAFF WORKING OUTDOORS. THE LECTURE SERIES, INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES AND RELATED WERE NOT POSSIBLE TO CONTINUE AFTER MARCH WITH THE ONSET OF COVID-19 BUT THEY WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL IN THE SUMMER AND FALL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TIME PERIOD. MOST SIGNIFICANT, WE HIRED OUR FIRST HORTICULTURAL MANAGER AND THE ADDITIONAL LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE AND PROFESSIONALISM RAISED THE CHARACTER OF THE GARDEN'S WORK IN THIS AREA.

EDUCATION - WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW FACILITIES, MANY OF OUR CLASSES AND WEEKLY ACTIVITIES HAD TO STOP IN SEPTEMBER. THE BACK FIVE PROJECT BEGUN THE PREVIOUS YEAR BECAME THE MOST DYNAMIC PART OF OUR EDUCATION PROGRAM BRINGING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO THE GARDEN TO PARTICIPATE IN DOCUMENTATION OF THE NATURAL SPECIES IN THE RIPARIAN AND UPSLOPE HABITAT. RECLAMATION AND WORKFORCE TRAINING ON HABITAT RESTORATION ALSO CONTINUED WITH PROVISIONS FOR COVID-19 SAFETY. HALF A DOZEN PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS WERE INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT. ALONG WITH THE NATURAL SCIENCE WORK, TRAINING IN MINDFULNESS AND PARTICIPATING IN A DIVERSE, EQUITABLE, AND INCLUSIVE WAY WAS ALSO A THREAD IN THE LEARNING PROCESS.
