The mission of Nordic Northwest is to preserve, communicate and celebrate Nordic Heritage, Culture and Innovation.
Cultural Center: Nordic Northwest (NNW) presented a broad range of programming during the fourth full fiscal year (March 2019-February 2020) at the cultural center,Nordia House. Programming included exhibits, films, concerts, lectures, classes, workshops, and special events focused on the history, culture, arts, science and technology of the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. We welcomed an estimated 57,000 visitors throughout the fiscal year.
Midsummer is a one day event that occurs in June. It has a tradition that has been a part of Portlands history for 90 years. Raising the summer maypole is the highlight of the celebration. Food, drink, games, entertainment and family activities abound. It attracts an estimated 3,000 visitors.The Lucia Pageant is an annual event honoring the Nordic tradition of Lucia, Queen of Light. This pageant has become a scholarship program, awarding scholarships to young women who exemplify academic achievement and service to the community. Awardees include a Lucia Queen a runner-up and up to seven members of the Lucia Court.Nordic Northwests concert series included ABBAgraphs, Gangspil, Too Grand and Scandinavian Chorus to name a few.Our Maker Series included Viking Jewelry, Nordic woodworking, wheat weaving and needle felting classes.Our Performing Arts & Film Series featured Thumbelina by Oregon Shadow Theatre, Portland Story Theaters Urban Tellers, Portland International Film Festivals Amateurs and several Nordic Film courses.
Between March 2019 and February 2020 Nordic Northwest presented a large range of cultural exhibits. March 2019-Hygge Exhibit-Hygge is a Danish word and concept that is integral to their way of living. Hygge means cozy, comfy and familiar. The Exhibit explained the concept as well as a displayed hygge corner that guests could relax in and take time to fully understand and appreciate the concept.April-July 2019-FROM SWEDEN TO OREGON: THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE 1850-1950 Exhibit-This exhibit followed the Swedish immigrants to Oregon and revealed what became of their lives, hopes, and dreams. This exhibit was complemented by a series of public events and programs.July-November 2019-Design Play by Joel Henriques-This exhibit featured the whimsical art of Joel Henriques, focusing on his oeuver of toys, craft, and fine art. His work explored the connection between visual and emotional responses to playful, positive, functional design and how it helps us live more joyfully artful lives.December 2019-January 2020-God Jul! Celebrating Nordic Winter Traditions-This exhibit showed a handful of unique Nordic winter holiday traditions from Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Local members of the Nordic Northwest community selected each tradition and their experience provided a deeper context for how the tradition plays out in contemporary society.January-February 2020-Mind the Earth Climate Change Climate Action Exhibit-This exhibit used satellite imagery to share new vantage points about the global climate crisis. The exhibition focused on challenges and international best practices to provoke action at all levels of society regarding the way we use our planets shared and finite resources.
