Organizations Filed Purposes: To create, instruct and share the art of documentary storytelling.

NW Documentarys mission is to teach, and support documentary filmmaking and non fiction storytelling. We do this through workshops, youth programs, access to equipment and a public editing lab, and cultivation of a supportive community. In addition to general daily support offered by staff and our community space NW Documentary ran the following programs in 2019: DIY WorkshopsNW Documentary continued to run signature DIY Documentary programs that lower barriers and welcome anyone with a story into the world of documentary filmmaking. The key workshops in this program are: DIY DocumentaryWeekend Skills WorkshopsDIY Story CraftYouth ProgramsNW Documentary teaches documentary filmmaking to youth through hands-on project focused camps. Students learn camera work and editing while exploring the world around them. In 2019 NW Documentary explored several ways to expand the youth programs we offered. NW Documentary adapted existing curriculum for new programs with Saturday Academy and in public schools. The youth programs NW Documentary offered in 2019 are:OMSI Hancock OMSI NewportSaturday AcademyProduced By HerSunset High School Lake OswegoRecording ResilienceOregon Doc Camp NW Documentary continued to develop Oregon Doc Camp. This year in addition to the strong programming offered each year NW Documentary was able to offer scholarships to filmmakers of color with support from the Oregon Film Office. Oregon Doc Camp is a filmmaker retreat at Silver Falls State park that brings filmmakers from all over the region and country together to recharge, network, and learn.Anthology Film Project: Canopy Stories NW Documentary completed and screened the first Anthology Film Project which brought 11 filmmakers together to create 12 films. These films all used an individual tree as the starting point for a story that explored the history and urban landscape of Portland.Nonprofit Story Lab The nonprofit story lab is a project by NW Documentary to connect filmmakers with nonprofits to help tell the stories of the good work these nonprofits are doing. The goal is to create opportunities and work for filmmakers and give local nonprofits media to support their missions.
