Preserve The Old Church as a historic and vital architectural structure and utilize its inherent qualities as a performance space by creating, fostering, & promoting programs that reflect and enhance the artistic and cultural life of the community.
The Old Church Society (TOC) runs an all ages venue in the historic "Old Church". TOC's dual mission is to preserve & celebrate the building's historic architecture & to create music & arts programs that enhance the cultural life of the community.
The Old Church concert hall in downtown Portland attracts over 85,000 visitors annually. We are a non-religious organization with a dual mission: To preserve & celebrate this historically significant Carpenter Gothic structure, which was built in 1882; & make the most of its unique attributes as a performance space by creating & fostering programs that enhance the artistic & cultural life of the community. In 2019, we offered our 51st year of weekly free lunchtime concerts, particularly benefiting low-income members of the community, seniors, & those with special needs. Our free monthly "Little Ears" concerts for young children celebrated its seventh year in 2019. We also continued our "We Can Listen" programming which provides a venue for organizations & individuals to share their stories. Culturally diverse programming of all kinds of music from around the world & discounted rental rates make us an incubator for young musicians and a resource for teachers & local performing arts organizations. We protect this historic treasure by maintaining its distinctive architectural features, such as the Povey Brothers stained glass & the original Hook and Hastings pipe organ, now the only one of its kind in the city.
