PassinArt: A Theatre Company is an African American producing theater company whose mission is to entertain, educate and inspire artists and audiences while addressing critical issues facing our community.
Along with its very successful annual production of Black Nativity by Langston Hughes, PassinArt A Theatre Company presented three mini-plays at the annual 2020 Fertile Ground Festival highlighting emerging playwrights in the Portland/Metropolitan area. The cast and crew of these performances consisted of 85% African Americans and 60% women of various ages. Like most of the country, Passinart was severely impacted this year by the coronavirus. The company had planned and was ready to open its mainstage production of Seven Guitars by August Wilson; however, due to state stay-at-home orders the weekend the production was scheduled to open, the show was forced to close. Due to the uncertainties related to COVID-19, the Board agreed to cancel the annual fundraiser, Sweet Taste of the Arts, and other scheduled programming for the remainder of the year. While other planned events were also canceled due to restrictions from the coronavirus, the staff worked diligently and successfully in securing grants from other funding sources to offset the impact of COVID-19, maintain general operations, and secure additional resources to support programming for the 2020-2021 season. Other accomplishments include PassinArt?s launch of its Volunteer Recruitment & Training Program that resulted in 25 core volunteers. The company also approved two additional board members to support the work and mission of the organization moving forward.
