PORTLAND CENTER STAGE (PCS) PRODUCED 286 PERFORMANCES OF SEVEN PLAYS IN ITS 2019-20 SEASON, OFFERING ITS REGIONAL CONSTITUENCY A BROAD RANGE OF THEATRICAL EXPERIENCES FROM DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES. THE YEAR'S PRODUCTIONS, WHICH DREW AN AUDIENCE OF MORE THAN 95,000, INCLUDED: LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA'S "IN THE HEIGHTS; LEE SUNDAY EVANS' ADAPTATION OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S "MACBETH; THE WORLD PREMIERE OF BRITTANY K. ALLEN'S "REDWOOD; "MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY," BY LAUREN GUNDERSON & MARGOT MELCON; JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL'S "HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH; JOCELYN BIOH'S "SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY; "THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME," BY SIMON STEPHENS, BASED ON THE NOVEL BY MARK HADDON; AND HEATHER RAFFO'S "9 PARTS OF DESIRE." CONTINUED ON SCH OUNFORTUNATELY, MOST PERFORMANCES OF THE LATTER TWO PRODUCTIONS HAD TO BE CANCELED DUE TO THE COVID PANDEMIC, AS WELL AS SCHEDULED PRODUCTIONS OF LAUREN YEE'S "CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND AND CAROLINE HEWITT'S "HOWARDS END."
PORTLAND CENTER STAGE IS DEEPLY INVESTED IN DEVELOPINGAND PRODUCING NEW WORKS THAT ENRICH THE CONTEMPORARY THEATER REPERTOIRE. TODATE, 80 PLAYS COMMISSIONED OR DEVELOPED BY PCS HAVE GONE ON TO BE PRODUCED AT MORETHAN 200 PROFESSIONAL THEATERS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, AND THEUNITED KINGDOM. FOREMOST AMONG PCS'S NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS IS THE ANNUAL JAW (JUST ADD WATER): A PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL, HELD EACH JULY. FOR JAW2019, THREE SCRIPTS WERE SELECTED FOR DEVELOPMENT: ROGER GUENVEUR SMITH'S "OTTOFRANK," KARA LEE CORTHRON'S "WHAT ARE YOU WORTH?, AND CAROLINE HEWITT'S "HOWARDSEND." IN ADDITION TO THE JAW FESTIVAL, AND DESPITE COVID, PCS DEVELOPED NEWWORK FOR VIRTUAL OR, EVENTUALLY, LIVE PERFORMANCE, INCLUDING PARTICIPATION IN "PLAY AT HOME." CONTINUED ON SCH OPCS JOINED 25 OTHER COMPANIES IN THIS NATIONALTHEATER PROJECT AND COMMISSIONED FOUR PORTLAND PLAYWRIGHTS SARA JEAN ACCUARDI, E. M. LEWIS, ANYA PEARSON, AND JOSIESEID TO CREATE SHORT PLAYS DESIGNED TO BE READ AND PERFORMED BY THE PUBLIC FROM THEIR OWN HOMES.
ALTHOUGH IN-THEATER AND IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS WERE SUSPENDED IN MARCH 2020, MORE THAT 8,200 YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN PCS'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS INCLUDING: A) VISIONS & VOICES, A FREE RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN WHICH PROFESSIONAL WRITER/DIRECTORS TEACH PLAYWRITING COURSES TO TEENS AT AREA HIGH SCHOOLS AND NON-PROFIT AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS; B) STAGE DOOR, WHICH PROVIDES STUDENTS AND TEACHERS WITH FREE OR LOW-COST ($15) TICKETS TO PCS PERFORMANCES, ALONG WITH FREE WORKSHOPS, RESOURCE GUIDES, AND BACKSTAGE TOURS, C) PCS TEEN COUNCIL, CREATED BY AND FOR TEENS INTERESTED IN ADVANCING THEIR INVOLVEMENT WITH THEATER; E) TEEN ACADEMY, WHICH OFFERS PRE-PROFESSIONAL INTENSIVES; AND F) JOB SHADOWING, INTERNSHIPS, AND VOLUNTEER CAREER DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN A RANGE OF THEATER DEPARTMENTS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, PCS ALSO OFFERED A VARIETY OF CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS ON ACTING, PLAYWRITING, STAGECRAFT, ETC. CONTINUED ON SCH OFOR ADULTS OF ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS. ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR PLAYGOERS AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE THEATER INCLUDED PRE-SHOW PROLOGUES, POST-SHOW Q&AS WITH ACTORS, TOURS OF THE ARMORY, AND OTHER FREE EVENTS.
