Organizations Filed Purposes: PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE IS DEDICATED TO PRODUCING QUALITY AND INTIMATE PERFORMANCES IN WHICH THE INTERACTION BETWEEN ARTISTS AND AUDIENCE IS PARAMOUNT. WE HOLD THEATRE TO BE A SPACE IN WHICH PEOPLE OF ALL SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, RACIAL, SEXUAL AND POLITICAL BACKGROUNDS CAN COME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE COMPLEXITY OF OUR SHARED HUMAN EXPERIENCE.

PRODUCTION OF QUALITY, INTIMATE PERFORMANCES IN WHICH ARTISTS/AUDIENCE INTERACTION IS PARAMOUNT.

IN SEASON 12, PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE WAS GUIDED BY OUR VISION OF "A WORLD AWAKENED BY THE WONDER OF THEATRE", AND MISSION TO "CELEBRATE THE COMPLEXITY OF OUR SHARED HUMAN EXPERIENCE." THIS MISSION AND VISION GUIDED US INTO THE NEW LANDSCAPE WHERE HUMAN CONNECTION - REAL, DEEP, THOUGHTFUL, VULNERABLE, HONEST CONNECTION IS OUR MOST VALUABLE ASSET. GUIDING US INTO A LANDSCAPE WHERE BUSINESS AS USUAL ISN'T AN OPTION, AND WHERE WE EXPLORE THE COMPLEXITY OF OUR DIFFERENCES. OUR HUMAN DIFFERENCES MAKE US STRONGER, JUST AS BIODIVERSITY IN THE NATURAL WORLD MAKES A HABITAT MORE RESILIENT. RESILIENCE WAS THE NAME OF THE GAME THIS SEASON, KICKING OFF WITH SARAH DELAPPE'S THE WOLVES, FOLLOWED BY WOMEN OF WILL BY TINA PACKER, A CHRISTMAS CAROL BY CHARLES DICKENS AND WRAPPING UP THE SEASON EARLY DUE TO THE EMERGENCE OF COVID-19 WITH DOMINIQUE MORISSEAU'S PIPELINE. GEORGE STEVEN JR'S THURGOOD HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS LIFT AND WE MAY PRODUCE IT SAFELY IN THE THEATRE.

OUR SCHOOL-BASED THEATER EDUCATION PROGRAMS REACHED 244 YOUTH (MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS). OUR FALL FESTIVAL OF SHAKESPEARE (10-WEEK PROGRAM SERVED 5 MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOLS) LINKED STUDENTS' FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH SHAKESPEARE'S PROSE TO THE THRILL OF PARTICIPATING IN LIVE PERFORMANCE. WE USED A TRADITIONAL ORAL WAY OF LEARNING (HEARING AND REPEATING), WHICH LEVELS THE PLAYING FIELD FOR STUDENTS WITH VARYING ABILITIES. WHEN YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCE SHAKESPEARE AS ACTORS, WHAT ONCE SEEMED DAUNTING AND ARCANE COMES ALIVE. OUR SOCIAL JUSTICE THEATRE PROJECT SHIFTED FROM A FOCUS ON GUN VIOLENCE TO PROVIDING A SPACE FOR STUDENTS FROM DA VINCI ARTS MIDDLE SCHOOL TO PROCESS THE CHANGES HAPPENING AS ALL SCHOOL ACTIVITIES SHIFTED TO ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING DURING THE PANDEMIC.

IN SEASON 12, TEN APPRENTICES PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM. APPRENTICES ARE OFFERED CLASSES IN MOVEMENT, VOICE, SCENE STUDY, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, AND DEVISING FOR ENSEMBLES. THEY LEARN ALL THE ASPECTS OF RUNNING A THEATER BY BUILDING SETS, SUPPORTING FRONT-OF-HOUSE, HANGING AND FOCUSING LIGHTS, PARTICIPATING IN RUN CREW, AND CO-TEACHING IN THE FALL FESTIVAL OF SHAKESPEARE PROGRAM. THEY ALSO PARTICIPATE IN OUTREACH/MARKETING/FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES, SPECIAL EVENTS, WORKING BOX OFFICE, AND PROVIDING ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT.
