THE NON-SECTARIAN PRODUCTIONS ARE USUALLY THEMATIC AND HAVE A STORY THAT FAMILY AUDIENCES CAN FOLLOW. EACH YEAR THE PERFORMANCE BRINGS BACK CERTAIN "TOUCHSTONES" - SONGS AND POETRY THAT AUDIENCES HAVE COME TO EXPECT AND CAN JOIN IN ON. NEWCOMERS ARE TREATED TO PRE-PERFORMANCE INSTRUCTI

PORTLAND REVEL'S PROGRAM CYCLE FOCUSES ON THE ANNUAL "CHRISTMAS REVELS" PRODUCTION, A NON-SECTARIAN FAMILY-FRIENDLY PROGRAM CELEBRATING THE SEASONS THROUGH SONG, DANCE, STORY AND RITUAL OF THE PAST AND PRESENT, CREATING COMMUNITY ACROSS GENERATIONS AND CULTURES. A LARGE VOLUNTEER CHORUS OF ADULTS AND CHILDREN IS TRAINED AND SUPPORTED BY PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS IN MUSIC, CHORAL SINGING AND THEATER ARTS. PROGRAMMING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR INCLUDES CONCERTS FEATURING FOLK MUSIC FROM AROUND THE WORLD, POETRY AND STORYTELLING. COMMUNITY SINGS AND DANCES ALLOW PARTICIPANTS OF ALL AGES TO LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT CULTURES AND TRADITIONS, OFTEN FOCUSED ON THE COUNTRY OR AREA THAT WILL BE FEATURED IN THE NEXT UPCOMING CHRISTMAS PRODUCTION.

IN 2016 PORTLAND REVELS LAUNCHED A SPECIAL CHILDREN'S PROGRAM AS A SPIN-OFF TO THE FULL CHRISTMAS REVELS PRODUCTION. TARGETED TOWARD FAMILIES WITH YOUNGER CHILDREN, THE ONE HOUR PRODUCTION MODELED THE TIME-TESTED ELEMENTS OF THE SEASON'S REGULAR PRODUCITION: SINGING, DANCING AND AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION. CALLED COMMEDIA BANBINI AFTER THE FULL PRODUCTION'S COMMEDIA ITALIANA, IT FEATURED THE SAME MUSICIANS AND COMEDIC ACTORS, BUT HIGHLIGHTED THE CHILDREN'S CHORUS. AUDIENCE SURVEYS REVEALED THAT 63% OF THE COMMEDIA BANBINI AUDIENCE WAS NEW TO REVELS, AN INDICATOR THAT THIS NEW PROGRAM MAY BUILD AUDIENCE FOR THE MAIN SHOW. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AUTHORIZED UP TO 12,000 IN AVAILABLE CASH TO SUBSIDIZE THIS PILOT; THE SHOW WAS MORE SUCCESSFUL, REQUIRING ONLY 8000. FOR 2017 THE BOARD HAS AUTHORIZED A SECOND YEAR OF THIS CHILDREN-FOCUSED PRODUCTION, AGAIN FOLLOWING THE 2018 MAIN SHOW'S NORTHLAND THEME AND EXPECTS IT TO APPROACH BREAK-EVEN.

PROGRAMMING DURING THE REST OF THE YEAR INCLUDES COMMUNITY SING-A-LONGS AND INSTRUCTIONAL DANCES. THESE ALLOW PARTICIPANTS OF ALL AGES TO LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT CULTURES AND TRADITIONS, OFTEN FOCUSED ON THE COUNTRY OR AREA THAT WILL BE FEATURED IN THE NEXT UPCOMING CHRISTMAS PRODUCTION. REVELS WILL FORMALIZE THESE COMMUNITY EVENTS AS TRADITION DAYS, COMBINING INSTRUCTION, PERFORMANCE AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION AND COMMUNITY SHARING.
