ORCHESTRA:THE ASSOCIATION HAS OFFERED RIGOROUS MUSIC EDUCATION AND PERFORMANCE PRACTICE SINCE 1924. IN SEASON 96, OVER 275 MUSICIANS RANGING IN AGE FROM 7 TO 23 WERE ACCEPTED BY AUDITION FROM OVER 100 SCHOOLS IN THE AREA; FROM WOODBURN IN THE SOUTH, TO BATTLE GROUND AND VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON, IN THE NORTH, TO DAYTON AND FOREST GROVE ON THE WEST SIDE, AND TO GRESHAM AND CORBETT ON THE EAST SIDE OF PORTLAND. ALTHOUGH COMPETITION FOR VIOLINS AND CELLOS WAS VERY TOUGH, ON AVERAGE, 70 PERCENT OF ALL APPLICANTS WERE ACCEPTED, AND EVERY STUDENT IN NEED RECEIVED FINANCIAL AID. THE ASSOCIATION ENSEMBLES PERFORMED 13 CONCERTS THROUGHOUT THE REGION AND STATE IN THE 2019-2020 SEASON, INCLUDING 3 OF ITS SCHEDULED FLAGSHIP CONCERTS AT THE ARLENE SCHNITZER CONCERT HALL IN DOWNTOWN PORTLAND, PRIOR TO THE COVID-19 SHUTDOWN. AFTER GOVERNOR KATE BROWNS EXECUTIVE ORDER BANNING GATHERINGS, THE ASSOCIATION MOVED ALL ITS PROGRAMMING ONLINE.
COMMUNITY RELATIONS:IN 2019-2020, THE ASSOCIATION SERVED OVER 18,250 PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. THIS INCLUDES MORE THAN 10,000 STUDENTS (GRADES 2 THROUGH 8) AND CHAPERONES WHO RECEIVED PRINTED MATERIALS FOR OUR ANNUAL FREE CHILDREN'S CONCERTS, WHICH WERE UNFORTUNATELY CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19. THE ASSOCIATION ALSO PROVIDES MUSIC EDUCATION ACTIVITIES FOR YOUTH FROM THE COMMUNITY, WHICH REACHED NEARLY 2,500 STUDENTS IN SEASON 96 BEFORE THE SHUTDOWN, WITH FREE ENTRY-LEVEL GROUP CLASSES FOR DOUBLE BASS, FREE WORKSHOPS FOR BAND INSTRUMENTS, FREE CONDUCTOR VISITS AND CLINICS AT SCHOOLS, FREE COACHING FOR BAND STUDENTS AT LOW-INCOME MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND LOW-COST PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONS TAUGHT BY ADVANCED PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA MUSICIANS. THESE ACTIVITIES ARE SUPPORTED BY TUITION FEES, TICKET SALES, FOUNDATION AND GOVERNMENT GRANTS, BUSINESS AND CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS, AND INDIVIDUAL DONORS.
