The Refugee Center Online uses technology to help refugees and displaced migrants build new lives in the United States.
Resources: The RCO's extensive database connects refugees and other immigrants to pre-existing resources in their own communities through searchable lists of specific state, city, and town services. These include everything from medical care and low- income housing to culturally specific clothing and ethnic foods. Search results automatically include a map with directions to the location and the associated website and phone number, drastically increasing the awareness and accessibility of resources in both urban and rural areas. Our website also offers basic information to help newcomers understand and adjust to life in America. The RCO's website had over 250,000 visitors in 2017.
Education: The RCO's Education Program includes free online courses to help newcomers study for their GED and apply for citizenship. These courses can be translated into newcomer languages, and as online resources, can be taken anywhere at any time: on bus rides to-and-from work or after getting children to bed. The RCO also offers a professional development course that trains educators how to work with refugee youth in their classrooms. Over 12,000 learners enrolled in the RCO's free courses in 2017.
Community: the RCO's Refugee Voices - blogs and stories by newcomers, as well as our online forums, provide a platform for refugees to share their stories, help each other, share knowledge and insights, get information and build communities. The RCO published over 100 stories by refugee authors in 2017.
