Organizations Filed Purposes:
The mission of TOGO CORE is to build community, provide a cultural supportive and nurturing environment that build the capacity of Togo children, youth and families in Oregon. TOGO CORE strives to help communities reach their highest potential through charitable support, guidance, and education opportunities, so they can live healthy, productive, and joyful lives.
COVID-19 HEALTH EQUITY GRANT with Oregon Health Authority: provided economic resources to communities members such as thermometers, personal protective items, wrap around support and services; distribution of cash for wage relief, household expenses, childcare support, business loss. Also distribution of technology equipment and educational materials to improve access to telehealth and distance learning. Distribution of culturally appropriate food gift cards to families. Distribution of resources including food boxes and materials for bedding, home heating, and cooling costs, and outdoor gear for situation of homelessness. Provided Safety and violence prevention education: culturally appropriate services that address violence prevention and social skills programs for parents and youth to address stress, depression and self-care. Rental and utility assistance payments for households. Provided online webinars to community on physical and mental health. Educate community in cultural specific and appropriate ways to manage stress, depression, physical, mental health, behavioral health, substance addictions, self-care, and COVID-19 topics.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OUTREACH with Oregon Health Authority. Provided education and directly engaged with the community in COVID-19 related issues. Had several online community check-ins through Zoom. Personnel participated in various information sessions to gather information on COVID-19 related issues: mental and physical, safety from the pandemic, housing, childcare, food, financial, technology/academic assistance, all through a cultural specific focused lens. Weekly distribution to families of the following: PPE, toiletries, masks, hand sanitizers, gift card for youth, household supplies, thermometers, food boxes.
FOOD JUSTICE with Multnomah County. Distributed fund to households, reaching about 200 people. Large community virtual meetings using Zoom platform. Provided information on the pandemic and the change of behaviors to prevent or stop the spread of the Virus. TOGO CORE used guidance materials from Federal and local government. Sent our youth leaders to attend virtual youth summits with REAP Inc. and the New BRIDGE Initiative to bring Africans and African Americans together. TOGO CORE Outreach coordinators organized TOGO CORE youth virtual community gatherings. There are many sessions that focused on creating the space for families to share how they are managing both the COVID-19 and the anti-Black racism crisis as well as collecting current needs. Other sessions focused on mental health. There were sessions particularly to provide information on resources available to support communities in need. TOGO CORE Outreach coordinators built and updated community list and identifying students at all levels. They referred community members to resources available through the government agencies and some non-profits. They reach out to community members by checking on one another by phone, text message, WhatsApp app, and other audio-visual platforms.
