WATERSHED CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION
BIG CREEK TRIBUTARIES. THIS PROJECT IMPLEMENTED THE SECOND PHASE OF A THREE PHASE PROJECT DESIGNED TO ACCOMPLISH A SUB-BASIN WIDE STREAM ENHANCEMENT EFFORT. 318 PIECES OF WOOD AND 254 BOULDERS WERE PLACED BY EXCAVATOR THROUGHOUT BIG CREEK AND 4 OF ITS TRIBUTARIES ACROSS 29 INSTREAM ENHANCEMENT SITES. 54 ONSITE PIECES OF WOOD INCLUDING WHOLE TREES, ROOT WADS, AND DUFF LOGS WERE ALSO INCORPORATED INTO THESE SITES. BOULDERS WERE USED TO BRING UP THE STREAM LEVEL AND TO BALLAST LOGS. LOGS WERE BALLASTED WITH LARGER BOULDERS DUE TO THEIR HIGH BUOYANCY AND ABILITY TO SHIFT DURING HIGH FLOWS. EXCAVATOR CORRIDORS WERE SEEDED WITH CERTIFIED WEED-FREE SEED AND PLANTED WITH NATIVE CONIFERS AND WILLOW IN THE WINTER OF 2018 WITH VOLUNTEERS FROM THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT, TROUT UNLIMITED AND THE COQUILLE TRIBE. WASSON CREEK ASSESSMENT THE OUTCOME OF THIS PROJECT WAS THE PRIORITIZATION OF INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL AND MITIGATION PROJECTS IN THE WASSON CREEK SUB-BASIN. AQUATIC AND INVASIVE SPECIES INVENTORIES WERE PRODUCED THROUGH SURVEYS CONDUCTED THROUGHOUT 8.33 MILES OF MAINSTEM WASSON CREEK AND 5 MILES OF ITS TRIBUTARIES. INVASIVE SPECIES WERE LARGELY ABSENT FROM THE UPPER STEAM NETWORK, ALTHOUGH DENSE HIMALAYAN BLACKBERRY STANDS COMPRISED THE MAJORITY OF THE RIPARIAN VEGETATION IN THE LOWER 2.45 MILES OF THE MAINSTEM WASSON CREEK. APPROXIMATELY 32 MILES OF THE ROAD NETWORK WITHIN THE SUB-BASIN SURVEYED HAD EXTENSIVE SCOTCH BROOM INFESTATIONS. THESE INFESTATIONS WERE VERY DENSE WITHIN THE ROAD GRADE WHERE DISTURBANCE IS HIGH. BLM GRANT L14AC0211 BIG BEND FISH. NEW GRANT MATERIAL PURCHASES MADE TO START STREAM ENHANCEMENT.
