Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO PROMOTE THE APPRECIATION OF NATURE AND RESPECT FOR NATURAL PLACES, FOCUSING ON BIRDS AND OTHER WILDLIFE, AND FOSTER ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY WITH PROGRAMS CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH NATURE.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: SALEM AUDUBON SOCIETY HAS BEEN A SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROVIDER IN THE MID-WILLAMETTE VALLEY FOR SEVERAL DECADES. COVID-19 SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED OUR IN-CLASS PROGRAMS. MOST OF OUR WORKSHOPS WERE DELIVERED VIA ZOOM ON A PREREGISTRATION BASIS. WE OFFERED AROUND A DOZEN ZOOM WORKSHOPS, ATTENDED BY AROUND 240 PARTICIPANTS.WE ARE PARTNERING WITH U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS OF THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY NWR COMPLEX TO CREATE A NEW NATURE CENTER AT ANKENY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, SOUTH OF SALEM. THE NATURE CENTER WILL SERVE AS A RESOURCE FOR REGIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, WITH TWO CLASSROOMS. THE FIRST PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION IS NEARLY COMPLETE. THE CENTER IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN TO THE PUBLIC IN WINTER 2021, WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING AND MASK WEARING REQUIRED. CONSERVATION: SALEM AUDUBON IS AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN SEVERAL LOCAL AND REGIONAL ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION PROJECTS, INCLUDING RESTORING AND ENHANCING OUR NATURE RESERVE IN WEST SALEM, CONDUCTING FORMAL BIRD SURVEYS FOR THE OREGON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE, AND IN CREATING A NEW NATURE CENTER AT ANKENY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS OF THE MID-WILLAMETTE VALLEY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE COMPLEX. WE ALSO WORK CLOSELY WITH THE CITY OF SALEM AS AN ADVISOR AND PARTNER ON CONSERVATION-RELATED PROJECTS. SALEM AUDUBON COORDINATES THE ANNUAL SALEM CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT, WHICH INVOLVES AROUND 110 VOLUNTEERS.
PUBLIC PROGRAMS: SALEM AUDUBON SOCIETY OFFERS PROGRAMS FOCUSED MAINLY ON BIRDS IN THEIR NATURAL HABITATS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THE PROGRAMS ALSO TOUCH ON CONSERVATION AND PROTECTION OF NATURAL RESOURCES. OUR MONTHLY MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND FEATURE GUEST SPEAKERS MAKING POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS. IN THE PAST YEAR, WE CONDUCTED 6 SUCH PUBLIC LECTURES WITH APPROXIMATELY 250 ATTENDEES. WE ALSO ORGANIZED AND LED MORE THAN 30 FIELD TRIPS AND BIRD WALKS FOR THE COMMUNITY WITH A TOTAL OF AROUND 300 PARTICIPANTS. WE ALSO OFFERED WORKSHOPS ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS MOSTLY FOCUSED ON BIRDS. THE CORVID-19 PANDEMIC SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGED THE WAY WE CONDUCTED OUR IN-PERSON PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND OTHER EVENTS. WE HAD TO CANCEL OUR MONTHLY PUBLIC PROGRAMS IN MARCH AND APRIL. IN MAY, WE BEGAN USING THE ZOOM VIDEOCONFERENCING PLATFORM TO HOLD OUR PUBLIC MEETINGS. WE WERE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCT OUR MEETINGS USING ZOOM, BUT OUR ATTENDANCE WAS AROUND HALF OUR NORMAL ATTENDANCE. REGARDING FIELD TRIPS, IN MAY WE BEGAN EXPERIMENTING WITH SMALLER NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS, AT MOST WITH 6. WE CONTROLLED THE GROUP SIZES BY REQUIRING PREREGISTRATION. IN THIS WAY, WE WERE ABLE TO COMPLY WITH OREGON COVID-19 GUIDELINES. SO, WE WERE ABLE TO CONTINUE WITH SOME OF OUR NORMAL PUBLIC PROGRAMS, BUT WITH A REDUCED CAPACITY.
MEMBERSHIP: THE SALEM AUDUBON SOCIETY HAS GROWN SIGNIFICANTLY OVER THE PAST YEAR, FROM 750 TO 1,144. MEMBERSHIP IS COMPRISED OF A COMBINATION OF NATIONAL AUDUBON MEMBERS WHO LIVE IN OUR SERVICE AREA (MARION, POLK AND YAMHILL COUNTIES) AND LOCAL CHAPTER MEMBER. WE HAVE AN ACTIVE VOLUNTEER WORKFORCE OF APPROXIMATELY 100 HARD-WORKING PEOPLE WHO DONATE AN ESTIMATED 4,500 HOURS TO SALEM AUDUBON-SPONSORED ACTIVITIES.
