uid seeks to establish community centers in urban poor areas of African, southeast asian and Middle Eastern cities.
UID endeavors to empower the poor by offering training in skills and vocations that would help transform the community at large. The focus is living in the same neighborhoods where we work, at a lower economic level, so as to best understand the community we are working with.
Despite the major interruption due to the pandemic, we have maintained the activity of our community center program in Cairo, Egypt--where the focus has been on ESL classes, leadership development, life-skills, arts and trauma--among mostly Sudanese refugees in the city.In Nouakchott, Mauritania, we have sustained our community center effort, with a continued focus on urban agriculture, non-profit capacity building, and language learning. This year there was an added focus on pandemic mitigation, including the production of masks, training of health workers and community education efforts around anti-Covid methods. In both France and Latin America the main focus has been recruiting and developing qualified staff, though these efforts have been limited due to the pandemic.
