WE EXIST TO EMPOWER HAITIANS TO BUILD A STRONGER HAITI. WE COMBAT POVERTY BY EMPOWERING INDIVIDUALS THROUGH CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP IN FOUR KEY AREAS: ATHLETICS, JOB SKILLS TRAINING, DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.
ATHLETICS: IN 2019, WE LAUNCHED OUR FIRST YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE. THIS LEAGUE SAW OVER 500 KIDS FROM AGES 5-16 PARTICIPATE IN WEEKDAY PRACTICES AND SATURDAY GAMES. LOCAL HAITIAN COACHES TRAINED THEIR PLAYERS IN SKILLS TECHNIQUE AND SPORTSMANSHIP, OFFERING THESE YOUTH A PLACE TO BELONG AND A POSITIVE AND SAFE PLAYING ENVIRONMENT. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, SOCCER PRACTICES CONTINUED TO OFFER LOCAL CHILDREN A SAFE PLACE TO PLAY AND CONTINUED TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP. WE ALSO HELD BOTH A SOCCER AND A BASKETBALL COACHES TRAINING CLINIC, TRAINING A TOTAL OF 80 COACHES. THESE CLINICS TRAIN AND EMPOWER LOCAL COACHES TO IMPACT YOUTH IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES THROUGH ATHLETICS. OBJECTIVE: PLH SEES ATHLETICS AS A VALUABLE TOOL TO TRAIN UP THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS. THROUGH SPORTS, KIDS LEARN LEADERSHIP, CHARACTER, TEAMWORK, DETERMINATION AND SO MUCH MORE. IT IS OUR GOAL TO LAUNCH A YOUTH SOCCER ACADEMY IN 2020 AND HOST LEAGUES AND TOURNAMENTS TWICE A YEAR.
JOB SKILLS - ENGLISH: 2019 COMPLETED OUR SECOND SCHOOL YEAR OF ENGLISH COURSES FOR ADULTS. ENGLISH IS A VALUABLE SKILL IN HAITI AND OPENS UP DOOR OF OPPORTUNITY FOR WORK IN EDUCATION, HOSPITALITY, ADMINISTRATION, TRANSLATION, ETC. SEVENTY-FIVE STUDENTS COMPLETED THE 2019 SCHOOL YEAR, AND OVER 150 PARTICIPATED IN OUR 2-WEEK SUMMER BOOTCAMP. THE 2020 SCHOOL YEAR BEGAN WITH 6 COURSES AND 110 STUDENTS. OBJECTIVE: PLH SEEKS TO EMPOWER LOCALS TO ENTER AND THRIVE IN THE WORKFORCE BY CREATING OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN VALUABLE JOB SKILLS.
DISASTER RESPONSE: 2019 WAS A DIFFICULT YEAR FOR HAITI, PLAGUED BY MONTHS OF POLITICAL UNREST. DURING THE THREE-MONTH, COUNTRY-WIDE SHUTDOWN, PLH PARTNERED WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY LEADERS AND PASTORS TO DEVISE A RELIEF PLAN. WE DEVISED A 4-PART STRATEGY TO OFFER SHORT-TERM RELIEF DURING THIS CRISIS. FIRST, WE PROVIDED 120 LOCALS WITH A DAYS WORK WHICH ALLOWED THEM TO PURCHASED MUCH-NEEDED RESOURCES FOR THEIR FAMILIES. SECOND, WE PROVIDED 45 FARMERS WITH FUNDS TO PLANT A CROP, OF WHICH A PORTION OF THE HARVEST WAS RETURNED TO THE COMMUNITY AND THE REMAINDER SOLD TO INVEST IN THE NEXT CROP. THIRDLY, WE PARTERNED WITH NINE LOCAL CHURCHES, PROVIDING THE FUNDS FOR THEM TO PURCHASE FOOD ITEMS AND DISTRIBUTE THOSE TO THE FAMILIES IN NEED. LASTLY, WE HIRED SIX INDIVIDUALS FROM OUR ENGLISH CLASSES AND COACHES CLINICS TO RUN ENGLISH, SOCCER AND BASKETBALL YOUTH PROGRAMS TO OFFER LOCAL KIDS A CHANGE TO LEARN, PLAY AND DEVELOP.OBJECTIVE: DISASTER PREPAREDNESS IS ONE OF THE FOUR PILLARS OF PLH'S WORK. IN THIS, WE EMPOWER LOCAL LEADERS TO ASSESS SITUATIONS OF CRISIS AND NEED, TO DEVISE A STRATEGY, AND TO CARRY OUT THEIR PLAN WITH LOCAL PEOPLE. PLH SEEKS TO SUPPORT THE LOCAL LEADERS IN CARING FOR THEIR COMMUNITY AND NATION.
