WE ARE A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION WITH THE MISSION TO NURTURE THE ECOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC RESILIENCY OF FOOD AND FARMING SYSTEMS THROUGH EDUCATION, RESEARCH, POLICY, AND MARKET DEVELOPMENT.WE ENVISION AN EVER-CREATIVE CULTURAL PROCESS IN WHICH FARMERS AND CONSUMERS CREATE AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPES WITH HEALTHY REGIONAL SYSTEMS OF LAND USE, FOOD PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION.
MICHAEL FIELDS AGRICULTURAL INSTITUTE PROVIDES A FRAMEWORK FOR POSITIVE CHANGE IN FOOD AND FARMING SYSTEMS, FOOD POLICY, AND FOOD PRODUCTION.
THE INSTITUTE'S PUBLIC POLICY ACTIVITIES INCLUDED EDUCATING FARMERS AND OTHERS ABOUT THE FARM BILL POLICY PROCESS, COORDINATING FARMER-LED WATERSHED EDUCATIONAL EVENTS, SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS AT CONFERENCES AND UNIVERSITY CLASSROOMS, WORKSHOPS AT THE INSTITUTE OR AROUND THE STATE OF WISCONSIN, FIELD DAYS, AND WEB SITE DEVELOPMENT, TOTALING OVER 710 PARTICIPANTS. THE MAJORITY OF THESE EVENTS WERE ATTENDED BY 40 OR MORE PARTICIPANTS. WE ALSO COORDINATED A COVER CROPS COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE INSTITUTE, UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, AND THE USDA'S DAIRY FORAGE RESEARCH CENTER.
THE INSTITUTE'S RESEARCH OUTREACH ACTIVITIES INCLUDED 2 FIELD DAYS, A STATE-WIDE CONFERENCE, A 6-PART WEBINAR SERIES, 3 FIELD TOURS AND2 PRESENTATIONS FOR A TOTAL OF 1,031 PARTICIPANTS. ATTENDANCE WAS BY FARMERS, USDA TECHNICAL SERVICE STAFF, OTHER AGENCY STAFF, AND UNIVERSITY FACULTY. ATTENDANCE AT EACH EVENT RANGED FROM 10-398 PARTICIPANTS. A TOTAL OF 503.5 BOARD CERTIFIED CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS WERE AWARDED. ALSO 2 SCIENTIFIC PAPERS WERE PUBLISHED.
THE INSTITUTE'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS INCLUDED WORKSHOPS (BEEKEEPING, FRUIT TREE PRODUCTION & CARE, FARMERS' LEGAL ISSUES, FARM MANAGEMENT, GRANT WRITING), WORKING AND COLLABORATING WITH OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AND EDUCATING LOW-INCOME YOUTH IN THE MADISON AREA. ALL EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES WERE CONSIDERED AS OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY, STUDENTS, GARDENERS, FARMERS AND OTHER FOOD RELATED BUSINESSES. HOSTED FARM DINNERS CONNECTING & EDUCATING THE PUBLIC WITH LOCAL FRESH GROWN FOOD AND SEAFOOD FROM FISHERMAN IN THE GULF. ATTENDANCE AT THESE WORKSHOPS/EVENTS RANGED FROM 20-100 PARTICIPANTS.
