Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO HONOR THE DIGNITY, RESTORE HOPE AND CREATE LASTING CHANGE FOR HOMELESS AND THOSE AT RISK IN THE GREEN BAY AREA.
THE 2019-20 SHELTER SEASON SAW 550 GUESTS AT OUR DOORSTEP, 118 NIGHTS IN OVERFLOW, AND 17,600 NIGHTS OF SAFE SHELTER AT ON AVERAGE 32 NIGHTS PER PERSON. ST. JOHN'S SERVES THOSE NOT SERVED BY OTHER SHELTERS, AND WE HAVE NEVER OPERATED WITH CAPACITY, UTILIZING OFF-SITE OVERFLOW WHEN NUMBERS EXCEED OUR BUILDING CAPACITY OF 84. FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH NO ACCESS TO HOUSING DUE TO MENTAL HEALTH, CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS, TRAUMA AND ADDICTION, ST. JOHN'S PROVIDES SAFE SHELTER AND WRAPAROUND SUPPORT, INCLUDING ACHIEVEMENT LIVING AREAS FOR INDIVIDUALS IN RECOVERY AND/OR EMPLOYED AND CASE MANAGEMENT TO WORK TOWARD SELF-SUFFICIENCY. OVERALL, THE TRENDS WE ARE SEEING AND THE INCREASED NEED GO FAR BEYOND NUMBERS. WE HAVE SEEN OUR DEMOGRAPHICS CHANGE, AS WELL. 25% OF GUESTS ARE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18-24 YEARS, AND WE HAVE SEEN THE LEVEL OF MENTAL HEALTH AMONG GUESTS SKYROCKET. THESE TWO FACTORS ALONG WITH THE INCREASED NUMBERS OF GUESTS HAVE BEEN THE KEY TRENDS THAT HAVE GREATLY IMPACTED OUR SERVICES, BUDGET AND STAFFING. AND THIS WAS PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF THE COVID PANDEMIC. WHILE OUR SHELTER SERVICES WOULD TRADITIONALLY SCALE BACK TREMENDOUSLY ON MAY 1 WITH THE START OF THE SUMMER SAFE SLEEP PROGRAM, THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC LED US TO REMAIN OPEN WITH FULL SHELTER SERVICES THROUGH JUNE 15 WHEN THE BROWN COUNTY EXECUTIVE "SAFER AT HOME ORDER EXPIRED. FROM THE START OF OUR COVID-SPECIFIC RESPONSE ON MARCH 18, WE SERVED 269 INDIVIDUALS WHO WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE HAD NO PLACE TO GO DURING THIS TIME OF CRISIS, RISKING INFECTION AND POSSIBLY SPREADING THE VIRUS TO OTHERS.
THE MICAH CENTER, OUR YEAR-ROUND DAYTIME DROP-IN CENTER, HAS ALSO SEEN A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN NUMBERS THIS PAST YEAR WITH OVER 1,000 INDIVIDUALS WHO WERE HOMELESS OR AT-RISK OF BECOMING HOMELESS ENTER OUR DOORS IN THE PAST YEAR. IN ADDITION TO THE COMPASSIONATE DROP-IN CENTER, WE CAN PROVIDE THESE GUESTS ACCESS TO CASE MANAGEMENT, WORKSHOPS, RECOVERY AND SUPPORT GROUPS, ON-SITE MEDICAL CARE, AND MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING. 6,240 HOURS OF CASE MANAGEMENT HAVE BEEN PROVIDED TO HELP PEOPLE ACHIEVE GOALS AND WORK TOWARD SELF-SUFFICIENCY.
WELLSPRING, OUR DAYTIME RESOURCE CENTER FOR WOMEN, WAS NOT IMMUNE TO THIS RISE IN NUMBERS, AS THEY SAW THEIR AVERAGE NUMBERS GO FROM APPROXIMATELY 300 WOMEN PER YEAR TO OVER 400 WOMEN THIS PAST YEAR. BECAUSE SO MANY WOMEN WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED HOMELESSNESS HAVE ALSO SURVIVED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND OTHER TRAUMA, A RESOURCE CENTER LIKE WELLSPRING IS A LIFELINE THEY NEED TO SUCCESSFULLY START THEIR HEALING AND LIVE THEIR FULLEST LIVES. 2,080 HOURS OF CASE MANAGEMENT HAVE BEEN PROVIDED TO HELP PEOPLE ACHIEVE GOALS AND WORK TOWARD SELF-SUFFICIENCY.
