Organizations Filed Purposes: TO PRESERVE AND PRESENT SIGNIFICANT IMAGES OF RAILROADING, INTERPRETING THEM IN PRINT, EXHIBITIONS, AND ON THE INTERNET.

TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ABOUT RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART THROUGH EDUCATION, RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS, AND EXHIBITIONS, AND TO SERVE AS A FORUM FOR THE NATIONAL COMMUNITY OF RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHERS AND ARTISTS.

PUBLICATIONSTHE CENTER PUBLISHES A QUARTERLY JOURNAL, RAILROAD HERITAGE, THAT USES PHOTOGRAPHS AND ART TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE RAILROAD'S INFLUENCE ON ECONOMIC GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT, POPULAR CULTURE, AND THE LIVES OF THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO BUILT, OPERATE AND MAINTAIN NORTH AMERICA'S RAILROADS. BOOKS ADD TO THIS MESSAGE, INCLUDING A NEW TITLE FOR 2019, THE RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHY OF J. PARKER LAMB, WHICH DRAWS ON IMAGERY FROM THE CENTER'S COLLECTIONS AND SHOWCASES THE WORK OF A LUMINARY IN THE FIELD DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, J. PARKER LAMB. THE CENTER IS PREPARING ANOTHER TITLE IN THIS SERIES FOR 2020, THE RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHY OF DONALD W. FURLER, WHICH ALSO DRAWS FROM THE COLLECTION. AS NOTED ABOVE, THE CENTER ALSO PARTNERED WITH INDIANA UNIVERSITY PRESS ON A NEW BOOK ABOUT TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROADING, WHICH IS ALREADY IN ITS SECOND PRINTING AND WAS MENTIONED ON THE FRONT-PAGE OF THE WALL STREET JOURNAL'S "BOOKS" SECTION FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 11-12.

COLLECTIONSTHE CENTER MAINTAINS AN ARCHIVE OF APPROXIMATELY 300,000 PHOTOGRAPHS AND PERFORMS ARCHIVAL PROCESSING OF ITS COLLECTION INTO ARCHIVAL-SAFE STORAGE MATERIALS. ANTICIPATED ADDITIONS IN 2020 SHOULD PUSH THE TOTAL NUMBER OF IMAGES ABOVE 500,000. THE CENTER DIGITIZES BOTH THE PHOTOGRAPHS AND THEIR ASSOCIATED METADATA, SHARING IMAGES THROUGH ITS WEBSITE, SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS, AND PUBLICATIONS, WHILE MAKING THE IMAGES AVAILABLE TO RESEARCHERS, AUTHORS, AND OTHER PUBLISHERS. GROWTH OF THE COLLECTION HAS LED TO A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN IMAGE USAGE REQUESTS, AND IMAGES FROM THE CENTER'S ARCHIVE NOW APPEAR FREQUENTLY IN BOOKS AND MAGAZINES BY OTHER PUBLISHERS AND AUTHORS. ONE EXAMPLE IS THE "ARCHIVES TREASURE" FEATURE THAT APPEARS IN EACH ISSUE OF CLASSIC TRAINS MAGAZINE AND SPOTLIGHTS A PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE CENTER'S ARCHIVE. THE CENTER'S COLLECTION IS NOT RECORDED ON THE ORGANIZATION'S FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.A HIGHLIGHT OF THE CENTER'S ARCHIVE INCLUDES THE JIM SHAUGHNESSY COLLECTION, WHICH ARRIVED IN OCTOBER 2019 AND CONTAINS APPROXIMATELY 90,000 PHOTOGRAPHS COVERING RAILROADS THROUGHOUT THE U.S., CANADA, AND MEXICO FROM THE 1940S INTO THE 2000S. THE COLLECTION ALSO INCLUDES ABOUT 200 GLASS PLATE NEGATIVES COLLECTED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER THAT DATE FROM THE 1880S TO THE 1910S, MAKING THEM THE OLDEST IMAGES IN THE CENTER'S ARCHIVE. SHAUGHNESSY'S WORK HAS BEEN PUBLISHED EXTENSIVELY IN BOOKS AND MAGAZINES, AND HE IS WIDELY REGARDED AS ONE OF THE THREE MOST SIGNIFICANT RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHERS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. PROCESSING THE SHAUGHNESSY COLLECTION WILL TAKE MULTIPLE YEARS AND IS THE CENTER'S FOREMOST ARCHIVING PRIORITY FOR 2020.

CONFERENCESTHE CENTER HOSTS A THREE-DAY ANNUAL EVENT AT LAKE FOREST COLLEGE, THIRTY MILES NORTH OF CHICAGO, FEATURING PRESENTATIONS ABOUT RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART. THE EVENT GIVES PHOTOGRAPHERS AND RESEARCHERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO NETWORK AND EXCHANGE IDEAS, BOTH THROUGH FORMAL PROGRAMMING AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. ATTENDEES COME FROM ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES AND SEVERAL OTHER COUNTRIES. THE CENTER HELD A SECOND CONFERENCE ABOUT TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROADS AT THE BYU MUSEUM OF ART IN PROVO, UTAH, ON MARCH 29-30 IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE OPENING OF AFTER PROMONTORY: 150 YEARS OF TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROADING, A NEW EXHIBITION AND PUBLICATION PROGRAM THE CENTER PREPARED TO MARK THE MAY 10, 2019 SESQUICENTENNIAL OF THE NATION'S FIRST TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD.
