MADISON YOUTH CHOIRS GUIDES A COMMUNITY OF YOUTH IN FINDING AND SHARING THEIR VOICES THROUGH THE STUDY AND PERFORMANCE OF DIVERSE CHORAL MUSIC THAT ENRICHES THEIR HEARTS, MINDS, AND LIVES. ITS WORK INSPIRES COMMUNITIES LOCALLY, REGIONALLY, AND AROUND THE WORLD TO EMBRACE THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF CHORAL PERFORMANCE. THE ORGANIZATION IS CENTRAL TO A VIBRANT YOUTH ARTS CULTURE IN DANE COUNTY THAT INVOLVES SINGERS WHO REFLECT THE CULTURAL TAPESTRY OF THE COMMUNITY.

TUITION-BASED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING - MYC EDUCATES OVER 500 YOUNG PEOPLE, AGES 7-18, ANNUALLY THROUGH ELEVEN CHOIRS DELIVERING A COMPREHENSIVE MUSIC EDUCATION FOCUSED ON CRITICAL THINKING, "EXPERT NOTICING", AND NURTURING A LIFELONG APPRECIATION FOR THE ARTS. OUR 2019-20 SEASON WAS CAST AS A STUDY ON PERSPECTIVE USING VISION 2020 AND HINDSIGHT 2020 AS LEADING THEMATIC IDEAS. DURING THE FIRST SEMESTER, UNDER THE TITLE VISION 2020 , WE ENVISIONED AND FOUND COMMON GROUND WITH ARTISTS WHO ARE ABLE TO IMAGINE SOMETHING THATS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE, AND WITH COMPOSERS CRAFTING MUSIC AHEAD OF THEIR TIME--THAT STILL INSPIRES HUNDREDS OF YEARS LATER. EXPLORING ARTISTIC VISION TAUGHT OUR SINGERS THERE ARE MULTIPLE WAYS OF SEEING AND INTERPRETING THE WORLD. OUR SECOND SEMESTER WAS INTERRUPTED ON MARCH 12, 2020, WITH THE ABRUPT CANCELATION OF WEEKLY IN-PERSON REHEARSALS DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. FOR THE SIX WEEKS WE WERE ABLE TO GATHER BEFORE THE PANDEMIC SHUTDOWN, WE WERE LED BY THE IDEA OF HINDSIGHT 2020 AND EXPLORED HOW OUR IDEAS OF ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION ARE INFLUENCED BY TIME, EXPERIENCE, CULTURE, ETC. THIS IDEA OF LOOKING BACKWARD WITH AN EYE TOWARD INTERPRETATION BECAME INCREASINGLY MEANINGFUL AS WE ENTERED THE COVID-19 SHUTDOWN WITH A DEEPENED SENSE OF APPRECIATION AND NOSTALGIA FOR LIFE BEFORE THE PANDEMIC. IN SPITE OF NOT BEING ABLE TO MEET IN PERSON, WE CONTINUED CONNECTING WITH OUR COMMUNITY VIRTUALLY ON A WEEKLY BASIS AND PRODUCED A VIDEO CELEBRATION OF OUR HINDSIGHT 2020 REPERTOIRE SHARED VIA FACEBOOK LIVE TO THOUSANDS OF VIEWERS ACROSS THE GLOBE IN MAY.

CONCERTS AND APPEARANCES - MYC PRODUCED TWO PUBLIC CONCERTS DURING THE 2019-20 SEASON. OUR WINTER CONCERT, VISION 2020, SHARED DIVERSE REPERTOIRE SPANNING SEVERAL CENTURIES AND TRADITIONS AND INCLUDED APPEARANCES BY NUMEROUS PROFESSIONAL GUEST MUSICIANS. THIS CONCERT WAS PRESENTED TO A LIVE AUDIENCE, PRE-PANDEMIC, IN DECEMBER 2019. OUR SPRING CONCERT, HINDSIGHT 2020, WAS A VIDEO CELEBRATION OF OUR SEMESTER'S REPERTOIRE KNIT TOGETHER WITH REFLECTIONS FROM CONDUCTORS AND SHARED WITH A GLOBAL AUDIENCE VIA FACEBOOK IN MAY. OTHER NOTEWORTHY ACCOMPLISHMENTS: A FREE PUBLIC PERFORMANCE BY MYC'S INTERGENERATIONAL CHOIR (AN ENSEMBLE THAT BLENDS VOICES OF MYC SINGERS, ALUMNI, AND PARENTS WITH SENIOR CITIZENS FROM CAPITOL LAKES RETIREMENT COMMUNITY) IN NOVEMBER 2019, APPEARING WITH THE MADISON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ON THEIR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CONCERT; A PUBLIC CONCERT WITH THE WORLD-RENOWNED TALLINN BOYS CHOIR (ESTONIA); OPENING THE YOUNG ARTISTS HANDEL ARIA COMPETITION; AND OUR COLLABORATION WITH MADISON CHORAL PROJECT, MADISON'S PROFESSIONAL ADULT CHOIR, ON THEIR FEBRUARY CONCERT JUST WEEKS BEFORE THE PANDEMIC SHUTDOWN ON MARCH 12, 2020.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION - MYC'S COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMS, PRE-PANDEMIC, INCLUDE A POPULAR IN-SCHOOL CHOIR SERVING AN ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE POPULATION AT LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL; AN INTERGENERATIONAL CHOIR, JOINING THE VOICES OF TEENAGE MYC SINGERS WITH SENIOR RESIDENTS OF CAPITOL LAKES RETIREMENT COMMUNITY; CHORAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS ENCOURAGING MUSICAL EXPLORATION FOR NEW SINGERS AT LUSSIER COMMUNITY EDUCATION CENTER AND THE HMONG LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT SUMMER CAMP, AS WELL AS COMING ALONGSIDE THE VOICES OF MADISON'S ARTS FOR ALL ADULT CHOIR. OUR ANNUAL TOURS VISITING SCHOOLS AND RETIREMENT HOMES THROUGHOUT DANE COUNTY WERE CURTAILED THIS SPRING DUE TO COVID-19.
