THE COALITION'S MAIN PURPOSE IS TO REDUCE INJURIES IN DANE COUNTY, WI. THE ORGANIZATION COORDINATES COUNTY-WIDE, COLLABORATIVE CAMPAIGNS AND EVIDENCE-BASED INJURY PREVENTION PROGRAMS TO ADDRESS DANE COUNTY'S TOP CAUSES OF SERIOUS INJURY AND INJURY-RELATED DEATHS- DRUG POISONING, SUICIDE, TRAFFIC CRASHES AND FALLS AMONG OLDER ADULTS. TO CONDUCT THESE ACTIVITIES, THE COALITION BUILDS PARTNERSHIP AMONG DIVERSE ORGANIZATIONS THAT SHARE THE COALITION'S PURPOSE.

TO CONDUCT THESE ACTIVITIES, THE COALITION BUILDS PARTNERSHIP AMONG DIVERSE ORGANIZATIONS THAT SHARE THE COALITION'S PURPOSE. SAFE COMMUNITIES EVALUATES ITS PROGRAMS AND HAS DEMONSTRATED A STRONG TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESS. FOR EXAMPLE, ONE COALITION PROGRAM HAS BEEN SHOWN TO REDUCE FALLS AMONG PARTICIPATING OLDER ADULTS BY 50%. SAFE COMMUNITIES IS A MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF SAFE COMMUNITIES AS DESIGNATED BY THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION CENTRE ON COMMUNITY SAFETY PROMOTION.
DRUG POISONING PREVENTION: SAFE COMMUNITIES OFFERS RECOVERY COACHING FOR INDIVIDUALS IN DANE COUNTY TO HAVE A TRAINED COACH WALK WITH THEM ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY. SAFE COMMUNITIES PARTNERS WITH HOSPITALS, ORGANIZATIONS, JAILS AND PRISONS TO EMPOWER PEOPLE THROUGH RECOVERY. SAFE COMMUNITIES ALSO HAD MEDDROP, WHICH ALLOWS FOR THE SAFE DISPOSAL OF MEDS. THIS ALSO INCLUDES PROVIDING LOCKED MED BOXES FOR SAFE STORAGE. THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COALITION IS A PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY GEARED TOWARDS THE AFRICAN AMERICAN/ BLACK COMMUNITY IN DANE COUNTY.
FALLS PREVENTION:THE SAFE COMMUNITIES FALLS PREVENTION TASK FORCE COLLABORATES TO FIND WAYS TO REDUCE FALLS AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN OUR COMMUNITY AT BOTH THE SYSTEM AND GRASSROOTS LEVELS. THANKS TO THE EFFORTS OF SAFE COMMUNITIES FALLS PREVENTION TASK FORCE MEMBERS AND PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS, RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE IN DANE COUNTY TO HELP OLDER ADULTS STAY SAFE AND INDEPENDENT.
SUICIDE PREVENTION:SAFE COMMUNITIES IS COORDINATING A ZERO SUICIDE PARTNERSHIP THAT INCLUDES ALL AREA HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS, AS WELL AS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS WITH A ROLE TO PLAY IN SUICIDE PREVENTION. SAFE COMMUNITIES OFFERS A FREE GATEKEEPER TRAINING WHERE PARTICIPANTS LEARN THE WARNING SIGNS FOR SUICIDE, HOW TO OFFER HOPE, AND HOW TO SEEK HELP TO SAVE A LIFE. SAFE COMMUNITIES LAUNCHED A REPLICATION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE'S PROJECT CONNECT GUNS SHOP PROJECT IN 2016.
