THE WORLDWIDE FOUNDATION FOR CREDIT UNIONS, INC. (WF) MISSION IS TO SUPPORT CREDIT UNION AND FINANCIAL COOPERATIVE SYSTEMS IN DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES, ASSIST IN TIMES OF DISASTER AND TO REPORT BACK TO DONORS ON HOW THEIR SUPPORT HELPED THE INSTITUTIONS AND THEIR MEMBERS. PRIMARY ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED BY WORLDWIDE FOUNDATION INCLUDE THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CREDIT UNIONS' CREDIT UNION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAM, DISASTER RELIEF, AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREDIT UNION STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS.
SUPPORT CREDIT UNION SYSTEMS & MEMBERS IN DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES.
DISASTER RELIEFIN 2019, THE WORLDWIDE FOUNDATION FOR CREDIT UNIONS SAW MORE INSTABILITY, VOLATILITY AND VIOLENCE IN THE WORLD. FUNDS RAISED IN 2019 SUPPORTED WORLD COUNCIL'S DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS TOWARD THESE CHALLENGES IN CONTINUING TO STRENGTHEN AND SUSTAIN CREDIT UNIONS SYSTEMS, WHILE BEING THE FIRST RESPONDERS TO AID CREDIT UNION REBUILDING IN THE FACE OF A NATURAL DISASTER. AN EXAMPLE OF THE WORLDWIDE FOUNDATION'S GLOBAL IMPACT AND WORK INCLUDES: PROJECT STORM BREAK- HURRICANE DISASTER RELIEF: THE BAHAMASDURING THE WORLD COUNCIL'S WORLD CREDIT UNION CONFERENCE IN THE BAHAMAS, THE FOUNDATION RAISED $110,000 TO HOLD IN RESERVE TO FACILITATE IMMEDIATE DISASTER RELIEF AID TO INTERNATIONAL CREDIT UNION SYSTEMS DAMAGED IN THE WAKE OF A NATURAL DISASTER. NINETY DAYS FOLLOWING THIS SUCCESSFUL EFFORT, HURRICANE DORIAN HIT THE BAHAMIAN CREDIT UNION SYSTEM HARD, DESTROYING AND DISRUPTING CREDIT UNION OPERATIONS AND MEMBER LIVES IN THE PROCESS. IN RESPONSE, THE FOUNDATION PUT OUT A CALL TO AID TO SUPPORT OUR PEERS IN THE REGION, WHICH RESULTED IN $418,000 BEING RAISED IN SUPPORT OF REBUILDING THE SYSTEM.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CREDIT UNION DEVELOPMENT THE WORLDWIDE FOUNDATION PROVIDED FUNDING TO WORLD COUNCIL OF CREDIT UNIONS TO SUPPORT ITS CREDIT UNION DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES. EXAMPLES OF WORLD COUNCIL'S DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:SUPPORTING REGIONAL STABILITY: COLOMBIA & VENEZUELATHE FOUNDATION'S PRIORITY FUND CONTINUES TO SUPPORT THE WORK OF DEVELOPING CREDIT UNIONS AND FOSTERING FINANCIAL INCLUSION WORLDWIDE AND NO OTHER PROJECT EXEMPLIFIED THIS WORK THAN OUR COLOMBIAN PROJECT. THE PROJECT CLOSED IN 2019 WITH EXCEEDING ITS GOAL OF REACHING 253,055 COLOMBIANS, 80% OF WHICH WERE INTRODUCED TO THE COLOMBIAN FINANCIAL SYSTEM FOR THE FIRST TIME. BILL AND MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIPA TWO-YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BILL AND MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION AND THE ASIAN CONFEDERATION OF CREDIT UNIONS AIMS TO ASSESS ASIAN CREDIT UNION SYSTEMS READINESS TO MOVE INTO THE DIGITAL AGE. STAFF WORKED WITH PHILIPPINE AND INDONESIAN CREDIT UNION SYSTEM REPRESENTATIVES TO BEGIN MAPPING OUT A MOBILE STRATEGY FOR THE CREDIT UNIONS TO PROVIDE THEIR SERVICES, WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY CONNECTING THEIR INSTITUTIONS TO THE LOCAL COUNTRY PAYMENTS AND DIGITAL ECOSYSTEM. BASED ON THIS INITIAL STUDY, THE PROJECT HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO PLAN, CREATE, TEST AND LAUNCH INTEROPERABLE PAYMENT PLATFORMS ENABLED BY A DIGITAL FINANCIAL TOOLKIT FOR CREDIT UNIONS IN THE PHILIPPINES AND INDONESIA, EVENTUALLY EXTENDING ACROSS ASIA.
EDUCATION AND TRAININGCREDIT UNIONS ENABLE HARD WORKING PEOPLE TO HELP THEMSELVES. THEY SUPPORT THE ABILITY OF CITIZENS TO DEPEND ON THEMSELVES RATHER THAN ON THE STATE OR ON CHARITY. AN EXAMPLE OF SOME OF THE EDUCATION/TRAINING INIATIVEES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:GLOBAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP NETWORKWORLD COUNCIL'S GLOBAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP NETWORK FORMALLY CAME UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF THE WORLDWIDE FOUNDATION AS A NETWORKING AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. THE NETWORK'S WEB OF SISTER SOCIETIES WORLDWIDE ARE THE CATALYST FOR DELIVERING IMPACT ON A LOCAL LEVEL WHILE HAVING AN ACTIVE DIALOGUE OF INDUSTRY CHALLENGES FACING WOMEN THROUGHOUT THE CREDIT UNION MOVEMENT. DURING 2019, OVER 10,000 VOLUNTEER HOURS WERE DONATED BY 110 SISTER SOCIETIES WORLDWIDE TO MORE THAN 30 COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS.
