A SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION AFFILIATE, THE WISCONSIN MARITIME MUSEUM ENGAGES AND EDUCATES THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE MARITIME HISTORY OF WISCONSIN AND THE GREAT LAKES, INCLUDING WISCONSIN'S WORLD WAR II SUBMARINES AND USS COBIA. THE MUSEUM SHARES THIS RICH HERITAGE BY COLLECTING AND PRESERVING ARTIFACTS AND ARCHIVAL MATERIALS, CREATING INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS, PROMOTING RESEARCH, AND PRESENTING AWARD-WINNING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. A FORUM FOR INFORMATION ABOUT THE PLANET'S LARGEST WATERSHED AND FRESH WATER SYSTEM, THIS PRIVATELY FUNDED MUSEUM IS RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE LEADING MARITIME MUSEUMS IN THE COUNTRY AND THE "PREMIER MARITIME MUSEUM ON THE GREAT LAKES." IN 2005, THE STATE ASSEMBLY DESIGNATED THE MUSEUM "THE STATE OF WISCONSIN'S MARITIME MUSEUM"
ENGAGES AND EDUCATES THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE MARITIME HISTORY OF WISCONSIN AND THE GREAT LAKES.
COLLECTIONS & EXHIBITS: IN 2019 THE MUSEUM CARRIED OUT SEVERAL KEY INITIATIVES CENTERED AROUND COLLECTIONS AND EXHIBITS. A NEW REGISTRAR WAS BROUGHT ON BOARD SEPTEMBER 2019 TO HEAD THE COLLECTIONS DEPARTMENT. A REORGANIZATION OF SEVERAL COLLECTIONS SPACES WAS UNDERTAKEN, INCLUDING SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS AT OUR OFFSITE STORAGE FACILITY. MUCH OF THIS WORK WAS CARRIED OUT WITH FUNDS FROM AN INSTITUTE OF MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SCIENCES GRANT. THE MUSEUM'S EXHIBITS ALSO RECEIVED SIGNIFICANT UPGRADES, IN PARTICULAR WISCONSIN'S WATERWAYS GALLERY, AND THE CHIEF WAWATAM STEAM ENGINE GALLERY. THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT DOUBLED THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ACCESSING MUSEUM EDUCATION PROGRAMS, BOTH IN THE BUILDING AND THROUGH OUTREACH INTO THE COMMUNITY. A FOCUS ON WATERSHED EDUCATION, ACCESSIBILITY, AND ADDING VOICES AND PERSPECTIVES TO OUR PROGRAMS UNDERSCORED THIS APPROACH.
