THE "WISCONSIN THUNDER" PROGRAM IS A TEAM-BASED WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL PROGRAM FOR MEN AND WOMEN, AGES 19-55 WHO ARE AFFECTED BY PHYSICAL DISABILITIES. THE THUNDER SERVES 12+ INDIVIDUALS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES THAT RANGE FROM SPINAL CORD INJURIES TO SPINA BIFIDA, AMPUTATION TO AMBULATORY DISABILITIES. AS A DIVISION II, NWBA (NATIONAL WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION) AFFILIATED TEAM, THE THUNDER TRAVELS ACROSS THE MIDWEST AND THE COUNTRY TO PARTICIPATING IN WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS AND GAMES, GIVING OUR ATHLETES AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE FIT, ACTIVE, HEALTHY AND TO ENGAGE IN POSITIVE SOCIAL INTERACTIONS.
THE ASAP OR ADAPTIVE SCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC PROGRAM IS OUR K-12, INCLUSIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES STUDENTS, EDUCATORS AND ADMINISTRATORS TO ENGAGE IN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND DISABILITY AWARENESS, EDUCATION, AND EMPATHY THROUGH ADAPTIVE AND WHEELCHAIR SPORT. ASAP CONDUCTS DISABILITY AWARENESS ASSEMBLIES AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS "TAKEOVERS," TEACHING EVERYBODY WHAT IT'S LIKE TO PLAY IN A "DIFFERENT PAIR OF SHOES." SERVING OVER 1,000 STUDENTS IN THE PAST YEAR, ASAP ALSO WORKS WITH THE SCHOOL'S ADAPTIVE P.E. TEACHERS, DISTRICT PHYSICAL AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS, AS WELL AS GUIDANCE COUNSELORS TO IDENTIFY THE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AND ORTHOPEDIC IMPAIRMENTS WITHIN THEIR SCHOOLS WHO "QUALIFY" TO PARTICIPATE IN ADAPTIVE ATHLETICS.
TAC, OR THE ABILITY CENTER, IS AFAR, INC.'S FUTURE COMMUNITY CENTER. PLANNED TO BE A 200,000 SQUARE FOOT RECREATION, FITNESS AND ATHLETIC FACILITY, THE ABILITY CENTER IS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND THEIR SPECIAL NEEDS. TAC IS A UNIVERSALLY-DESIGNED FACILITY THAT WILL PROVIDE AFFORDABLE, ACCESSIBLE AND INCLUSIVE FITNESS, ATHLETICS, RECREATION, AND WELLNESS SERVICES TO CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH PHYSICAL AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES AS WELL AS THEIR FAMILIES. THE ABILITY CENTER IS DIRECTLY IN LINE WITH OUR RAMPUP EFFORTS THAT ARE MAKING GREATER MILWAUKEE THE MOST UNIVERSALLY INCLUSIVE RECREATION DESTINATION IN THE WORLD. WITH A 3 YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN IN PLACE, RAMPUP WILL DEVELOP A UNIVERSAL: PLAYGROUND, OUTDOOR FITNESS PARK AND WHEELCHAIR SOFTBALL FIELD IN PREPARATION TO LAUNCH OUR CAMPAIGN TO COMPLETE THE ABILITY CENTER.
