Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Benedict Center is an interfaith, nonprofit criminal justice agency working with victims, offenders and the community to achieve a system of justice that is fair and treats everyone with dignity and respect.
Womens Harm Reduction Program (WHRP): The WHRP serves approximately 300 women per year who are deferred by the courts or referred by probation as an alternative to incarceration and as a community-based treatment option for women who need mental health and/or substance use treatment. Women living in the community participate in services for an average of six-months. Services include individualized goal planning, substance use and mental health treatment, and group counseling that help women become empowered to make positive changes in their lives.Womens Reentry Program: In 2016, the Benedict Center expanded the Womens Harm Reduction Program to address the needs of women who are incarcerated at the Milwaukee House of Correction (HOC) and ready to reenter the community. The goal of the program is to support women in their efforts to successfully return to the community. Services conducted onsite at the HOC include individualized reentry planning, and individual and group counseling focused on addressing the trauma of incarceration, the impact of separation from their children and families, and increasing their coping skills. Each year over 300 women are served by this program.
Sisters Program: The Sisters Program is a neighborhood-based response to the health and safety needs of women in the street sex trade, including women who are trafficked. The program includes street outreach and two Drop-In Centers where women can safely rest and receive crisis management, safety planning, counseling, sexual assault advocacy and assistance, connection to housing, and other critical resources. Each year over 300 women in Milwaukee are served in this program.
Community Justice and Advocacy: The Benedict Center direct services and systems advocacy serve as interwoven and mutually reinforcing efforts. Accordingly, we work with systems partners to improve the health and safety outcomes for justice-involved women. While we advocate for equitable, fair and compassionate treatment of women (and all people) within the criminal justice system, our emphasis is on prevention and pre-arrest diversion efforts to equitably decrease the incarceration rates of women in the first place. We promote the expansion of harm reduction and housing first services that provide gender-responsive, culturally relevant, and trauma-informed supports so women can live safer and healthier lives for themselves, their children and our communities.
