Organizations Filed Purposes: Islands of Brilliance Inc. is a learning experience developed specifically for children and young adults on the autism spectrum.

Each student is paired with a mentor-volunteer with a visual design background. Classes are overseen by an experienced special education teacher, and offer additional hands-on creative activities in an unplugged makerspace area. The student and mentor work from initial sketches through design software. Students complete the class with an expanded knowledge of software design tools along with intangibles that are far broader and more important: a collaborative experience, sharing and presentation opportunities, conversation, personal connections, and most of all a sense of accomplishment.

A stand alone 2-3 hour workshop led by a well-known local figure in design, technology, art, or music. Our guest artist is given 5-10 minutes to present his or her work and define the project students will be working on. Students team up one on one with volunteer mentors, similar to the core design curriculum.

Islands of Brilliance offers STEM based curriculum such as coding, web development and 3D modeling software. Students who have demonstrated the aptitude for more complex software and the ability to work independently are invited to work with community partners, including UWM student organizations or other up and coming experts in emerging technology. Students work in a 2:1 model on a project of their choice using a range of software including MAYA, Autocat Fusion 360, Adobe Dimensions, WordPress, and Scratch.
