ALDEA PROVIDES FUNDS TO THE GUATEMALAN ORGANIZATION ASOCIACION BPD WHO PARTNERS WITH MAYAN COMMUNITIES IN RURAL GUATEMALA TO ADDRESS HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT ISSUES SUCH AS CHRONIC CHILDHOOD MALNUTRITION. WORKING WITH COMMUNITIES, ALDEA/ABPD CONSTRUCTS WATER SYSTEMS THAT BRING POTABLE WATER INTO EVERY HOME, AND BUILDS VENTED STOVES, LATRINES, AND GRAY WATER FILTERS TO ADDRESS QUESTIONS OF HOUSEHOLD SANITATION. THEY ALSO PROVIDE NUTRITION EDUCATION AND HEALTHY RECIPES, INSTRUCTION ON FAMILY GARDENS, AND TRAINING ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE. EDUCATION ON THE FIRST 1,000 DAYS, INCLUDING EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING AND AGE APPROPRIATE WEENING TECHNIQUES, IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THEIR WORK.
ADVANCING LOCAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH EMPOWERMENT AND ACTION (ALDEA) WORKS WITH ASOCIACION BPD IN GUATEMALA WHO PARTNERS WITH GUATEMALAN MAYANS AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO ADDRESS HEALTH AND NUTRITION ISSUES IN RURAL GUATEMALA BY: PREVENTING INFECTIOUS DISEASES BY BUILDING POTABLE WATER SYSTEMS THAT BRING RUNNING WATER TO COMMUNITIES AND HOMES; PREVENTING RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES, BURNS, AND DEFORESTATION BY CONSTRUCTING EFFICIENT, VENTED STOVES; AND IMPROVING SANITARY CONDITIONS BY CONSTRUCTING GRAY WATER FILTERS AND LATRINES. ALDEA/ABPD ALSO EMPOWERS WOMEN AND COMMUNITIES TO COMBAT CHRONIC CHILDHOOD MALNUTRITION, AND PROVIDES EARLY CHILDHOOD STIMULATION FOR CHILDREN UNDER 2. SINCE 2003, ALDEA/ABPD HAS WORKED IN MORE THAN 120 RURAL COMMUNITIES WITH OVER 8,000 FAMILIES. ALDEA ALSO CONDUCTS GUIDED TOURS OF OUR WORK IN ORDER TO BRING AWARENESS OF THE REGION AND ITS ISSUES TO PARTICIPANTS.
