Organizations Filed Purposes: TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO QUALITY HEALTH CARE IN NORTH CENTRAL WISCONSIN'S RURAL AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES, PRIMARILY THROUGH THE EDUCATION OF PRESENT AND FUTURE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS.

NORTH CENTRAL WI AHEC PRIORITY 2 PROGRAMS FOCUS ON DISTRIBUTION IMPROVING WORKFORCE DISTRIBUTION THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF WISCONSIN, PARTICULARLY RURAL AND UNDERSERVED AREAS AND POPULATIONS. THE OBJECTIVES ARE: A) TO INCREASE COMMUNITY-BASED TRAINING SITES AND PLACEMENTS FOR THE HEALTH AND PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE TO PRACTICE SERVING UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS AND AREAS, B) TO INCREASE MINORITY YOUTH & ADULTS' ENROLLMENT IN HEALTH CAREER PROGRAMS, INCLUDING PRIMARY CARE, BEHAVIORAL HEALTH, ORAL HEALTH, AND LONG-TERM CARE, C) TO IMPROVE RETENTION OF YOUTH & ADULTS IN RURAL AREAS TO FILL THESE WORKFORCE NEEDS (ENTRY-LEVEL POSITIONS & LONG-TERM CARE WORKFORCE NEEDS, D) TO PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACROSS THE SPECTRUM OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS (I.E. CNA TO NP, PA, MD, ETC.) WITH EMPHASIS ON EMS, AND E) SUPPORT PROVIDER RECRUITMENT STRATEGIES FOR RURAL AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. NCAHEC PROGRAMS CENTER ON RECRUITMENT AND SUPPORT OF HEALTH CARE STUDENTS, PROMOTION OF PRIMARY CARE PRACTICE, RECRUITMENT OF STUDENTS TO PRACTICE IN RURAL AREAS, SUPPORT OF FACULTY MENTORS AND PRECEPTORS AT COMMUNITY-BASED TRAINING SITES, CREATION OF REGIONAL COUNCILS TO ASSIST THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH (UWSMPH) WITH PRIORITY SETTING, MAINTENANCE OF WEB-BASED HEALTH CAREER RESOURCES, PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE PROGRAMS, CULTURAL COMPETENCE TRAINING, INTER-PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION, AND PROGRAMS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN, NATIVE AMERICAN, HISPANIC/LATINO AND ASIAN STUDENTS ENTERING HEALTH PROFESSIONS TRAINING PROGRAMS. EXAMPLES OF OUR MANY PROGRAMS INCLUDE: WISCONSIN EXPRESS (STUDENT IMMERSION PROGRAM FOCUSING ON AMISH/MENNONITE POPULATION AND AGING/VETERANS/DISABLE POPULATIONS), COMMUNITY HEALTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (8-WEEK INTERNSHIP AT LOCAL PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCIES), UWSMPH 3RD YEAR CHRONIC AND PREVENTIVE CARE PRECEPTORSHIP, PRECEPTORSHIP WITH UW 4TH YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS FOCUSED ON PRACTICING IN RURAL COMMUNITIES, FUTURE PHYSICIAN'S DAY FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS, AND A HEALTH SCIENCE EDUCATORS ACADEMY.

NORTH CENTRAL WI AHEC PRIORITIES 4 & 5 FOCUS ON EVALUATION & AHEC SCHOLARS PROGRAM A NEW LONGITUDINAL PROGRAM WITH INTERDISCIPLINARY CURRICULA CONDUCTED IN RURAL AND UNDERSERVED SETTINGS. THE OBJECTIVES ARE: A) DEFINED SET OF CLINICAL TRAINING ACTIVITIES AND DEFINED SET OF DIDACTIC TRAINING ACTIVITIES, AND B) DEFINED SET OF COMMUNITY-BASED TRAINING ACTIVITIES. AHEC SCHOLARS IS A TWO-YEAR PROGRAM FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONS STUDENTS INTERESTED IN SUPPLEMENTING THEIR EDUCATION BY GAINING ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN RURAL AND/OR UNDERSERVED URBAN SETTINGS. CORE TOPICS INCLUDE INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION, BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES, SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, CULTURAL COMPETENCY, PRACTICE TRANSFORMATION, AND CURRENT AND EMERGING HEALTH ISSUES. THE PROGRAM REQUIRES 40 HOURS OF EXPERIENTIAL & DIDACTIC TRAINING EACH YEAR.

NORTH CENTRAL WI AHEC PRIORITY 3 IS PRACTICE TRANSFORMATION DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN A HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE THAT IS PREPARED TO DELIVER HIGH QUALITY HEALTH CARE IN A TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM WITH AN EMPHASIS ON RURAL AND UNDERSERVED AREAS AND COMMUNITIES. THE OBJECTIVES ARE: A) TO STRENGTHEN AHEC'S CAPACITY TO ADVANCE THE COMPETENCIES OF THE HEALTHCARE AND PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE TO DELIVER HIGH-QUALITY CARE IN A TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM, AND B) TO STRENGTHEN THE FOCUS ON HEALTH PROMOTION AND DISEASE PREVENTION ACROSS POPULATIONS, PROVIDERS, AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH EVIDENCE-BASED, EVIDENCE-INFORMED, AND INNOVATIVE PRACTICES THAT HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO REDUCE HEALTH DISPARITIES. NCAHEC PROGRAMS AN INTER-PROFESSIONAL CASE COMPETITION FOR TEAMS OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS STUDENTS, PATCH PROGRAM (PROVIDERS & TEENS COMMUNICATING FOR HEALTH), INTER-PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS, AND CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER PROGRAMS.
