Organizations Filed Purposes:
COMMUNITY BIKE WORKS TEACHES LIFE LESSONS THROUGH BICYCLES, TO YOUTH WHO COULD BENEFIT MOST.
EARN A BIKE: IN OUR FLAGSHIP PROGRAM, STUDENTS 9 AND OLDER TEAM UP WITH ADULT MENTORS FOR A 12-WEEK COURSE ON BIKE MECHANICS AND SAFETY. WHILE WORKING ON THEIR BIKES, STUDENTS ALSO LEARN COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK, PERSEVERANCE, AND OTHER LIFE SKILLS. JUNIOR EARN A BIKE TEACHES SIMILAR LESSONS TO YOUNGER STUDENTS. UPON COMPLETING THEIR COURSES, STUDENTS EARN THEIR REFURBISHED BIKE AND A NEW HELMET! IN 2018-19, 507 BOYS AND GIRLS PARTICIPATED IN OUR BIKE MENTORING PROGRAMS; 92% EARNED THEIR BIKES. OF STUDENTS AT A UNITED WAY SCHOOL WHO PARTICIPATED IN EARN A BIKE, 72% IMPROVED THEIR SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.
DROP-IN, EARN A BOOK, AND CYCLING: EACH WEEKDAY, STUDENTS CAN COME TO OUR MADISON STREET AND EAST ALLENTOWN BIKE SHOPS FOR DROP-IN, WHICH OFFERS TIME WITH MENTORS AND ACTIVITIES INCLUDING BIKE WORK, HEALTHY LIVING, AND STEAM PROJECTS. IN EARN A BOOK, STUDENTS AND TUTORS READ NOVELS TOGETHER, WORK ON HOMEWORK, AND PLAY BRAIN GAMES WHILE EARNING TRIPS TO THE BOOKSTORE. FINALLY, WE OFFER TRAIL, TRACK, ROAD AND MOUNTAIN BIKE PROGRAMS THAT ALLOW STUDENTS TO BE ACTIVE AND SPEND TIME OUTDOORS WITH MENTORS. IN 2018-19, STUDENTS MADE 9,500 VISITS TO COMMUNITY BIKE WORKS AND SPENT NEARLY 20,500 HOURS WITH MENTORS.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND APPRENTICES: STUDENTS 12 AND OLDER WHO HAVE COMPLETED EARN A BIKE CAN PARTICIPATE IN YOUTH LEADERSHIP SEMINARS ON COLLEGES, CAREERS, AND COMMUNITY. ONCE THEY TURN 14, STUDENTS CAN APPLY TO BECOME PAID YOUTH APPRENTICES, MENTORING YOUNGER STUDENTS WHILE LEARNING WORK SKILLS. "I AM AT BIKE WORKS EVERY DAY," SAYS ERIC, 16. "I AM A YOUTH APPRENTICE, AND I GET PAID TO MAKE SURE THAT KIDS LEARN HOW TO FIX THEIR BIKE AND ARE READY TO RIDE. I LEARN WHILE I AM TEACHING THEM."
