Organizations Filed Purposes:
TEAM UP PHILLY IS DEDICATED TO EMPOWERING GIRLS IN UNDER-SERVED PHILADELPHIA NEIGHBORHOODS TO LEAD HEALTHY, CONFIDENT, AND SUCCESSFUL LIVES. SINCE 2006, TEAM UP PHILLY HAS BEEN WORKING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF GIRLS WHO LIVE IN COMMUNITIES LACKING ACCESS TO SPORTS, LEADERSHIP, AND ACADEMIC AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS. SINCE THE FIRST 6-WEEK BASKETBALL PROGRAM TEAM UP PHILLY PILOTED IN A WEST PHILADELPHIA GYM, PROGRAMS HAVE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE TUTORING, BASKETBALL, TENNIS, SWIMMING, HEALTHY COOKING CLASSES, LEADERSHIP INITIATIVES, LIFE SKILLS TRAINING, A PROGRAM FOR JUVENILE OFFENDERS, AND SUMMER CAMPS. ALL PROGRAMS ARE COMPREHENSIVE, COMBINING SPORTS, ACADEMIC SUPPORT, CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND NUTRITION EDUCATION WITH MENTORING FROM CARING COACHES AND TUTORS. TEAM UP PHILLY UTILIZES A LONG- TERM APPROACH, PROVIDING PROGRAMS FOR GIRLS THROUGHOUT MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL, IN ORDER TO HAVE THE MOST LASTING AND POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE TRAJECTORY OF THEIR LIVES. GIRLS IN TEAM
TO EMPOWER GIRLS IN GRADES 4 - 12 IN UNDERSERVED AREAS TO LEAD HEALTHY, CONFIDENT AND SUCCESSFUL LIVES BY COMBINING SPORTS, ACADEMICS, CHARACTER, LEADERSHIP, AND NUTRITION PROGRAMS WITH LONG TERM MENTORING.
GIRLS' AFTER-SCHOOL SPORTS (GASP) GASP IS TEAM UP PHILLY'S CORE PROGRAM, AND IS OFFERED TO GIRLS IN LOW- INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS OF PHILADELPHIA. IN GASP, GIRLS FROM 4TH-12TH GRADES LEARN BASKETBALL AND OTHER SPORT-SPECIFIC SKILLS AS WELL AS POSITIVE TRAITS THAT CAN BE PRACTICED AND MASTERED THROUGH PLAYING SPORTS: COOPERATION, RESILIENCE, TEAMWORK, DISCIPLINE, AND RESPECT. GIRLS LEARN TO CHALLENGE AND SUPPORT THEMSELVES AND EACH OTHER, BUILDING STRONG CHARACTER TRAITS AND A POSITIVE PEER NETWORK. TEAM UP PHILLY GIRLS ARE NOT JUST PLAYING; THEY ARE CHANGING THE TRAJECTORY OF THEIR LIVES.
TUTORING: TEAM UP PHILLY WORKS TO FILL THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP THAT EXISTS BETWEEN CHILDREN FROM LOW AND HIGH INCOME COMMUNITIES AND INSPIRE A LOVE OF LEARNING THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME. TEAM UP PHILLY PROVIDES TWO AFTERNOONS OF ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT DESIGNED TO DEVELOP CURIOSITY, PERSEVERANCE, AND ACADEMIC CONFIDENCE IN GIRLS. GROUPS OF VOLUNTEER TUTORS WORK WITH GIRLS ON FUNDAMENTALS OF WRITING AND MATH. POETRY WORKSHOPS, SCIENCE LABS, AND BOOK CLUBS INSPIRE FURTHER ENGAGEMENT. RESULTS OF THE TUTORING PROGRAMS INCLUDE IMPROVEMENT IN ATTENDANCE, GRADES, ADVANCEMENT, GRADUATION RATES, AND ACCEPTANCE INTO ACADEMICALLY SELECTIVE SCHOOLS, PROGRAMS, AND COLLEGES.
SUMMER CAMP: SUMMER PROGRAMS KEEP GIRLS ENGAGED IN POSITIVE ACTIVITIES, PROVIDE A SAFE, ENRICHING PLACE TO SPEND SUMMER, AND ENGAGE THEM IN ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO ALLEVIATE THE SUMMER SLIDE. TEAM UP PHILLY SPONSORS CHILDREN FOR A BASKETBALL, READING & MATH CAMP PROVIDING INSTRUCTION ON THE COURT AND IN THE CLASSROOM. OTHER GIRLS SPEND 6 WEEKS LEARNING TENNIS FUNDAMENTALS IN THE MORNING, AND ART, COOKING, READING, WRITING AND MATH IN THE AFTERNOON. GIRLS' LEADERSHIP CAMPS CONSIST OF LEADERSHIP AND LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMS FOCUSED ON LEARNING AND PRACTICING EMPOWERING CHARACTER TRAITS: GRIT, RESILIENCE, COMPETENCE AND CONFIDENCE. SENIOR LEADERS ARE ROLE MODELS/MENTORS, TEACHING YOUNGER GIRLS HOW TO BUILD POSITIVE PEER NETWORKS WHILE FURTHERING THEIR OWN LEADERSHIP SKILLS.
