SHIM MOBILIZES COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND IMPLEMENTS SUSTAINABLE PROGRAMS THAT COMPASSIONATELY HELP OUR NEIGHBORS MEET BASIC NEEDS, ACHIEVE SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND BUILD COMMUNITY.
SOUTH HILLS INTERFAITH MOVEMENT (SHIM) IS A COMPREHENSIVE HUMAN SERVICES 501(C)3 NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION. SINCE 1968, SHIM HAS BEEN PROVIDING CRITICAL SUPPORTIVE SERVICES TO FAMILIES LIVING IN THE SOUTH HILLS OF PITTSBURGH. SHIM'S MISSION IS TO MOBILIZE COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND IMPLEMENT SUSTAINABLE PROGRAMS THAT COMPASSIONATELY HELP OUR NEIGHBORS MEET BASIC NEEDS, ACHIEVE SELF-SUFFICIENCY, AND BUILD COMMUNITY. ANNUALLY, SHIM SERVES MORE THAN 7,500 STRUGGLING SUBURBAN FAMILIES, INCLUDING A GROWING NUMBER OF REFUGEE FAMILIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD. WHEN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC STRUCK PITTSBURGH, SHIM QUICKLY ADAPTED TO ADJUST ITS BASIC NEEDS PROGRAMMING TO SAFELY SERVE THE GROWING NUMBER OF PEOPLE SEEKING HELP. WITHOUT A LAPSE OF SERVICES, SHIM'S THREE SHOP-THROUGH FOOD PANTRIES PIVOTED TO PROVIDE DRIVE-THROUGH, WALK-UP, AND DELIVERY SERVICE. SINCE MARCH 2020, SHIM HAS SERVED A RECORD-BREAKING 2,600 PEOPLE MONTHLY IN ITS THREE FOOD PANTRIES, AN INCREASE OF 41 PERCENT FROM 2019 DURING THE SAME PERIOD. SHIM PURCHASES MORE THAN 70 PERCENT OF THE FOOD IT DISTRIBUTES ANNUALLY FROM THE GREATER PITTSBURGH COMMUNITY FOOD BANK. THE FOOD PANTRIES DISTRIBUTE APPROXIMATELY 600,000 POUNDS OF FOOD, INCLUDING 12,469 POUNDS OF FRESH PRODUCE GROWN IN 15 PARTNER GARDENS.SHIM ALSO DISTRIBUTES CLOTHING AND SMALL HOUSEHOLD ITEMS IN ITS COMMUNITY CLOSET TO 600 HOUSEHOLDS. SHIM'S BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAM SUPPLIES BACKPACKS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO MORE THAN 1,000 CHILDREN.
SHIM ADDRESSES ECONOMIC STABILITY BY PROVIDING FOOD ASSISTANCE, EMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE AND HOUSING ASSISTANCE. SHIM'S HOLISTIC APPROACH TO EACH CLIENT ALLEVIATES THE STRAIN OF POVERTY BY ADDRESSING UNDERLYING CAUSES AND GUIDING PEOPLE ON A ROAD TOWARD SELF-SUFFICIENCY.SHIM'S FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAMS PROVIDE FAMILIES WITH THE RESOURCES AND EDUCATION NEEDED TO SUCCEED. THE STAFF WORKS INTENSIVELY WITH INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES TO HELP THEM IDENTIFY THEIR GOALS AND OVERCOME ANY OBSTACLES TO ACHIEVING THOSE GOALS. SHIM OFFERS EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT, EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS, AND A FULL COMPLEMENT OF SERVICES TO REFUGEE FAMILIES THROUGH THE SHIM FAMILY CENTER. THIS INCLUDES HOME VISITING FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF FIVE, A NURTURING PARENTING COURSE, AN EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM, AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM, SUMMER CAMP, AND YOUTH MENTORING, ALL OF WHICH FOCUS ON THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF CHILDREN WITH FOREIGN-BORN PARENTS WHO ARE ADJUSTING TO A NEW CULTURE AND LIFESTYLE. SHIM'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING PREPARES CHILDREN TO ACHIEVE THEIR HIGHEST ACADEMIC POTENTIAL BY PROVIDING THE SUPPORTS THAT THEIR PARENTS, WHO ARE ALSO LEARNING THE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, ARE NOT ALWAYS ABLE TO PROVIDE. SHIM'S YOUTH MENTORING PROGRAM WAS ONE OF TWO ORGANIZATIONS TO BE AWARDED THE 2019 EXCELLENCE IN MENTORING AWARD FROM THE MENTORING PARTNERSHIP OF SOUTHWESTERN PA.
